Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

First Mehl

ਨਾਨਕ, ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਵਸਤੂ ਉਸ (ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ) ਲਈ ਸੂਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ (ਹਿੰਦੂ) ਲਈ ਗਾਂ।

: To take what rightfully belongs to another, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef.

ਆਤਮਕ ਆਗੂ ਤੇ ਪੈਗੰਬਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਜ਼ਮਾਨਤ ਦੇਣਗੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਮੁਰਦਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਂ ਖਾਵੇ।

Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us, if we do not eat those carcasses.

ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੁਰਗਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ। ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਤਾਂ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth.

ਕਾਨੂੰਨਨ ਨਾਜਾਇਜ਼ ਭੋਜਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਸਾਲਾ ਪਾਉਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਨ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ।

By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਝੂਠੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੇਵਲ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, from false talk, only falsehood is obtained. ||2||

ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

First Mehl:

ਪੰਜ ਨਿਮਾਜ਼ਾ ਹਨ, ਨਿਮਾਜ਼ਾ ਲਈ ਪੰਜ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਜ ਨਾਮ ਹਨ।

There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names.

ਪਹਿਲੀ ਸੱਚਾਈ, ਦੂਜੀ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਤੀਜੀ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨ ਪੁੰਨ ਹੈ।

Let the first be truthfulness, the second honest living, and the third charity in the Name of God.

ਚੋਥੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਰਤ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਵੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਮਹਿਮਾਂ।

Let the fourth be good will to all, and the fifth the praise of the Lord.

ਤੂੰ ਨੇਕ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਲਮਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਅਤੇ ਤਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਆਖ।

Repeat the prayer of good deeds, and then, you may call yourself a Muslim.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਝੂਠਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਾਪੁਰਾਂ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਪੱਲੇ ਪਏਗਾ।

O Nanak, the false obtain falsehood, and only falsehood. ||3||

ਪਊੜੀ।

Pauree:

ਕਈ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਵੱਖਰ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਹਨ।

Some trade in priceless jewels, while others deal in mere glass.

ਜੇਕਰ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਤਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਹਰਾਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

When the True Guru is pleased, we find the treasure of the jewel, deep within the self.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਾ। ਝੂਠੇ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਟੱਕਰਾ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਮਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

Without the Guru, no one has found this treasure. The blind and the false have died in their endless wanderings.

ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਅੰਦਰ ਗਲ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ।

The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in duality. They do not understand contemplative meditation.

ਇਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਹ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਫਰਿਆਦ ਕਰਨ?

Without the One Lord, there is no other at all. Unto whom should they complain?

ਕਈ ਦੌਲਤ-ਹੀਨ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਈਆਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਨਾਲ ਪਰੀ-ਪੂਰਨ ਹਨ।

Some are destitute, and wander around endlessly, while others have storehouses of wealth.

ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੇਰ ਬਾਕੀ ਕੋਈ ਦੌਲਤ ਨਹੀਂ। ਹੋਰਸ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਕੇਵਲ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਹ ਹੈ।

Without God's Name, there is no other wealth. Everything else is just poison and ashes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਅਮਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the Lord Himself acts, and causes others to act; by the Hukam of His Command, we are embellished and exalted. ||7||

ਸਲੋਕ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Salok, First Mehl:

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਅਖਵਾਉਣਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਅਖਵਾ ਲਵੇ।

It is difficult to be called a Muslim; if one is truly a Muslim, then he may be called one.

ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਠੜਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਧੰਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇ ਘੁਮੰਡ ਨੂੰ ਰੇਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਖੁਰਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾ ਮੇਸ ਦੇਵੇ।

First, let him savor the religion of the Prophet as sweet; then, let his pride of his possessions be scraped away.

ਪੈਗੰਬਰ ਦੇ ਮੱਤ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਤੇ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਵਹਿਮ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇ।

Becoming a true Muslim, a disciple of the faith of Mohammed, let him put aside the delusion of death and life.

ਉਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਿਲੋਂ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਕਰੇ, ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਵੇ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਸ ਸੁੱਟੇ।

As he submits to God's Will, and surrenders to the Creator, he is rid of selfishness and conceit.

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ-ਧਾਰੀਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋਵੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੇਵਲ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

And when, O Nanak, he is merciful to all beings, only then shall he be called a Muslim. ||1||

ਚਉਥੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Fourth Mehl:

ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ, ਗੁੱਸੇ, ਕੂੜ ਅਤੇ ਕਲੰਕ ਆਰੂਪਣੇ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਅਤੇ ਗ਼ਰੂਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ।

Renounce sexual desire, anger, falsehood and slander; forsake Maya and eliminate egotistical pride.

ਛੈਲ ਛਬੀਲੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਚੇਸ਼ਟਾ ਤੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਲਾਂਜਲੀ ਦੇ। ਤਦ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਵਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

Renounce sexual desire and promiscuity, and give up emotional attachment. Only then shall you obtain the Immaculate Lord amidst the darkness of the world.

ਸਵੈ-ਮਾਨਤਾ, ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਲਈ ਪਿਆਰ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇ। ਧੰਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਤਰੇਹ ਤੇ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਪਾ।

Renounce selfishness, conceit and arrogant pride, and your love for your children and spouse. Abandon your thirsty hopes and desires, and embrace love for the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the True One shall come to dwell in your mind. Through the True Word of the Shabad, you shall be absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਪਊੜੀ।

Pauree:

ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ, ਪਰਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਚੋਧਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿਣਾ।

Neither the kings, nor their subjects, nor the leaders shall remain.

ਦੁਕਾਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੇਰੂ ਖੇਰੂ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

The shops, the cities and the streets shall eventually disintegrate, by the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

ਪੁਖਤਾ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ੍ਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those solid and beautiful mansions-the fools think that they belong to them.

ਧੰਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਨਾਲ ਪਰੀ-ਪੂਰਨ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਖਾਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

The treasure-houses, filled with wealth, shall be emptied out in an instant.

ਕੋਤਲ, ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ, ਊਠ, ਹਾਥੀ ਸਣੇ ਅੰਬਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ,

The horses, chariots, camels and elephants, with all their decorations;

ਬਗੀਚੇ ਜਾਇਦਾਦਾਂ ਮਕਾਨ ਤੇ ਇਮਾਰਤਾ ਖੈਮੇ, ਓ ਕਿਸ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ;

the gardens, lands, houses, tents, soft beds and satin pavilions -

ਸਮੈਤ ਨਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਉਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਲੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਅਤਲਸੀ ਕਨਾਤਾ?

Oh, where are those things, which they believe to be their own?

ਨਾਨਕ, ਸਤਿ ਹੈ ਬਖਸ਼ਸ਼ਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਪਾਰ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪਛਾਣਿਆਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the True One is the Giver of all; He is revealed through His All-powerful Creative Nature. ||8||

ਸਲੋਕ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Salok, First Mehl:

ਜੇਕਰ ਦਰਿਆ ਦੁੱਧ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਗਾਈਆਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਚਸ਼ਮੇ, ਖੀਰ ਅਤੇ ਘਿਓ ਦੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ।

If the rivers became cows, giving milk, and the spring water became milk and ghee;

ਜੇਕਰ ਸਾਰੀ ਜਮੀਨ ਸ਼ੱਕਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣੇ,

If all the earth became sugar, to continually excite the mind;
