Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਫਿਰ ਭੀ, ਉਹ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

And yet, they go out to teach others.

ਜੋ ਖੁਦ ਠਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

They are deceived, and they deceive their companions.

ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਮੋਹਰੀ ਮਲੂਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!

O Nanak, such are the leaders of men. ||1||

ਚਉਥੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Fourth Mehl:

ਜੀਹਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਸੱਚ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those, within whom the Truth dwells, obtain the True Name; they speak only the Truth.

ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੇ ਟੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

They walk on the Lord's Path, and inspire others to walk on the Lord's Path as well.

ਜੇਕਰ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਦ ਮੈਲ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਟੋਭੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਗੋ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਮੈਲ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Bathing in a pool of holy water, they are washed clean of filth. But, by bathing in a stagnant pond, they are contaminated with even more filth.

ਪੂਰਨ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਹਨ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਰੈਣ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

The True Guru is the Perfect Pool of Holy Water. Night and day, He meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਣੇ ਖੁਦ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

He is saved, along with his family; bestowing the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, He saves the whole world.

ਸੇਵਕ ਨਾਨਕ, ਉਸ ਉਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਖੁਦ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to one who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it as well. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ।

Pauree:

ਕਈ ਫਲ ਤੇ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੁਗ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੂਹਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Some pick and eat fruits and roots, and live in the wilderness.

ਕਈ ਗੇਰੂ ਰੰਗੇ ਬਸਤਰ ਪਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਯੋਗੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਇਕਾਂਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੌਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Some wander around wearing saffron robes, as Yogis and Sanyaasees.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਘਲੇਰੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਲਈ ਲੋਚਦੇ ਹਨ।

But there is still so much desire within them-they still yearn for clothes and food.

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਬੇਅਰਥ ਵੰਞਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਂ ਉਹ ਘਰਬਾਰੀ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਤਿਆਗੀ।

They waste their lives uselessly; they are neither householders nor renunciates.

ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਮਰਣ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਡ ਉਤੇ ਮੰਡਲਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਹਾਲਤਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹਨ।

The Messenger of Death hangs over their heads, and they cannot escape the three-phased desire.

ਜਦ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਗੋਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦੀ।

Death does not even approach those who follow the Guru's Teachings, and become the slaves of the Lord's slaves.

ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The True Word of the Shabad abides in their true minds; within the home of their own inner beings, they remain detached.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

O Nanak, those who serve their True Guru, rise from desire to desirelessness. ||5||

ਸਲੋਕ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Salok, First Mehl:

ਜੇਕਰ ਬਸਤਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਲਹੂ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਮਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

If one's clothes are stained with blood, the garment becomes polluted.

ਜਿਹੜੇ ਇਨਸਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਹੂ ਚੁਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

Those who suck the blood of human beings-how can their consciousness be pure?

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੂੰ ਅੱਲਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਿਲ ਕਰਕੇ ਲੈ।

O Nanak, chant the Name of God, with heart-felt devotion.

ਹੋਰ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਹਨ, ਆਦਮੀ ਕੂੜੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Everything else is just a pompous worldly show, and the practice of false deeds. ||1||

ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

First Mehl:

ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਕੀ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ? ਜਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ੈ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਕੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?

Since I am no one, what can I say? Since I am nothing, what can I be?

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਵੇ ਮੈਂ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਲਬਾਲਬ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਲਿਬੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਧੋਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

As He created me, so I act. As He causes me to speak, so I speak. I am full and overflowing with sins-if only I could wash them away!

ਖੁਦ ਮੈਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਮੋਹਰੀ ਮੈਂ ਹਾਂ।

I do not understand myself, and yet I try to teach others. Such is the guide I am!

ਨਾਨਕ, ਜੋ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰਸਤਾ ਦਿਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the one who is blind shows others the way, and misleads all his companions.

ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਛਿਤ੍ਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਐਨ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਪੈਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਪਤਾ ਲਗੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਜਥੇਦਾਰ ਸੀ।

But, going to the world hereafter, he shall be beaten and kicked in the face; then, it will be obvious, what sort of guide he was! ||2||

ਪਊੜੀ।

Pauree:

ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ, ਮੌਸਮਾਂ ਘੜੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ!

Through all the months and the seasons, the minutes and the hours, I dwell upon You, O Lord.

ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਹੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਤੇ ਅਨੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!

No one has attained You by clever calculations, O True, Unseen and Infinite Lord.

ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਜੋ ਹਿਰਸ ਤਮ੍ਹਾ ਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਸਰਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬੇਵਕੂਫ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

That scholar who is full of greed, arrogant pride and egotism, is known to be a fool.

ਤੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ, ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ।

So read the Name, and realize the Name, and contemplate the Guru's Teachings.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖ-ਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਰਾਗ ਦੇ ਪਰੀ-ਪੂਰਨ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਹਨ।

Through the Guru's Teachings, I have earned the wealth of the Naam; I possess the storehouses, overflowing with devotion to the Lord.

ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਕੀਨ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੱਚਾ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Believing in the Immaculate Naam, one is hailed as true, in the True Court of the Lord.

ਉਸ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ, ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਦੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ।

The Divine Light of the Infinite Lord, who owns the soul and the breath of life, is deep within the inner being.

ਸੱਚਾ ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਬਾਕੀ ਦਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਰਚੂਨ ਹਟਵਾਣੀਆਂ ਹੈ।

You alone are the True Banker, O Lord; the rest of the world is just Your petty trader. ||6||

ਸਲੋਕ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Salok, First Mehl:

ਰਹਿਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਸਜਿਦ, ਭਰੋਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿਮਾਜ਼ ਵਾਲੀ ਫੂੜ੍ਹੀ ਦਰੁਸਤ ਤੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਰਾਨ,

Let mercy be your mosque, faith your prayer-mat, and honest living your Koran.

ਹਯਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਅਤੇ ਭਲਮਨਸਉਪਣ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਰਤ ਬਣਾ, ਇੰਞ ਤੂੰ ਮਸਲਮਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ।

Make modesty your circumcision, and good conduct your fast. In this way, you shall be a true Muslim.

ਦਰੁਸਤ ਆਚਰਣ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੱਕਾ, ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਰਹਿਬਰ ਅਤੇ ਨੇਕ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਲਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਮਾਜ਼ ਬਣਾ।

Let good conduct be your Kaabaa, Truth your spiritual guide, and the karma of good deeds your prayer and chant.

ਮਾਲਾ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇੰਞ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਰੱਖ ਲਵੇਗਾ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!

Let your rosary be that which is pleasing to His Will. O Nanak, God shall preserve your honor. ||1||
