Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਇਕਾਂਤੀ ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Sannyaasee smears his body with ashes;

ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਛਡ ਕੇ, ਭਲੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਜਤ ਕਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

renouncing other men's women, he practices celibacy.

ਭਾਵੇਂ ਮੈਂ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ ਪਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਊਮੇਦ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

I am just a fool, Lord; I place my hopes in You! ||2||

ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਰਮਤਾਈ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Kh'shaatriya acts bravely, and is recognized as a warrior.

ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਵੈਸ਼ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

The Shoodra and the Vaisha work and slave for others;

ਮੈਂ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੀ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

I am just a fool - I am saved by the Lord's Name. ||3||

ਸਮੂਹ ਰਚਨਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

The entire Universe is Yours; You Yourself permeate and pervade it.

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪ੍ਰਭਤਾ ਪਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ!

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are blessed with glorious greatness.

ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨੇ ਨੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਧਾਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

I am blind - I have taken the Lord as my Support. ||4||1||39||

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ, ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਚੌਥੀ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਰਬ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਅਕੱਥ ਹੈ।

The Speech of the Lord is the most sublime speech, free of any attributes.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਲਨ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕਰ।

Vibrate on it, meditate on it, and join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਭਉਜਲ ਦੀ ਨਾਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਵਾਰਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਤੂੰ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂ।

Cross over the terrifying world-ocean, listening to the Unspoken Speech of the Lord. ||1||

ਹੈ ਆਲਮ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਧ ਸਮੇਲਨ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਦੇ!

O Lord of the Universe, unite me with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਅਲਾਪਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

My tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord, singing the Lord's Glorious Praises. ||1||Pause||

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੋਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਬਣਾ,

Those humble beings who meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har

ਜਿਹੜੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਲ।

please make me the slave of their slaves, Lord.

ਤੇਰੇ ਨਫਰ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਇਕ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਣੀ ਹੈ।

Serving Your slaves is the ultimate good deed. ||2||

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ ਵਾਰਤਾ ਮੈਨੂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who chants the Speech of the Lord

ਉਹ ਮਨੁਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

that humble servant is pleasing to my conscious mind.

ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਗੋਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਭਾਰੇ ਨਸੀਬਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Those who are blessed with great good fortune obtain the dust of the feet of the humble. ||3||

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰੂਪ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,

Those who are blessed with such pre-ordained destiny

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੁਰ ਦੀ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਐਸੀ ਲਿਖਤਾਕਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

Are in love with the humble Saints.

ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Those humble beings, O Nanak, are absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||2||40||

ਗਊੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ, ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਚੋਥੀ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fourth Mehl:

ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਦੇਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਹੱਬੁਤ ਹੈ।

The mother loves to see her son eat.

ਮੱਛੀ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।

The fish loves to bathe in the water.

ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੋਜਨ ਪਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।

The True Guru loves to place food in the mouth of His GurSikh. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਨੇਹੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਨੂੰ ਐਸੇ ਰਬ ਦੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ,

If only I could meet those humble servants of the Lord, O my Beloved.

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੁਖੜੇ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Meeting with them, my sorrows depart. ||1||Pause||

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਆਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਵੱਡੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਗਾਂ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

As the cow shows her love to her strayed calf when she finds it,

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਤਨੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਮੁੜ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

and as the bride shows her love for her husband when he returns home,

ਏਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਅਲਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ।

so does the Lord's humble servant love to sing the Praises of the Lord. ||2||

ਪਪੀਹਾ ਮੁਸਲੇਧਾਰ ਮੀਹ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੈਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

The rainbird loves the rainwater, falling in torrents;

ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ (ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ) ਨੂੰ ਧੰਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।

the king loves to see his wealth on display.

ਰਬ ਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਚਕਰ-ਚਿਹਨ ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The humble servant of the Lord loves to meditate on the Formless Lord. ||3||

ਮਰਣਹਾਰ ਮਨੁਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਦੌਲਤ ਤੇ ਜਾਇਦਾ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਹੈ।

The mortal man loves to accumulate wealth and property.

ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਲੇ ਲਗਣ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਹੱਬੁਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The GurSikh loves to meet and embrace the Guru.

ਨਫਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਸੰਤਾ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਚਟਣ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Servant Nanak loves to kiss the feet of the Holy. ||4||3||41||

ਗਊੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ, ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਚੋਥੀ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fourth Mehl:

ਮੰਗਤਾ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਖੈਰ ਲੈਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਅਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The beggar loves to receive charity from the wealthy landlord.

ਭੁੱਖੇ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।

The hungry person loves to eat food.

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖ ਦੀ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟ ਕੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।

The GurSikh loves to find satisfaction by meeting the Guru. ||1||

ਹੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਬਖਸ਼, ਮੇਰੀ ਊਮੇਦ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ।

O Lord, grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; I place my hopes in You, Lord.

ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Shower me with Your Mercy, and fulfill my longing. ||1||Pause||

ਸੁਰਖਾਬਣੀ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਵੇਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।

The song-bird loves the sun shining in her face.

ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਸਮੂਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Meeting her Beloved, all her pains are left behind.

ਗੁਰ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਜੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The GurSikh loves to gaze upon the Face of the Guru. ||2||

ਵੱਛਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੁੰਘਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The calf loves to suck its mother's milk;

ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਰਿਦਾ ਖਿੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

its heart blossoms forth upon seeing its mother.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਵਲੋ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਜੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The GurSikh loves to gaze upon the Face of the Guru. ||3||

ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ, ਕੇਵਲ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਦੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਲਗਾਉ ਹਨ।

All other loves and emotional attachment to Maya are false.

ਇਹ ਝੂਠੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਜੀ ਟਾਂਕੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

They shall pass away, like false and transitory decorations.

ਗੋਲਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Servant Nanak is fulfilled, through the Love of the True Guru. ||4||4||42||
