Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਉਹ ਆਇਆ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਟੁਰ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੀ ਮਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

He came and he went, and now, even his name has died.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਪੱਤਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਂ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

After he left, food was offered on leaves, and the birds were called to come and eat.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs love the darkness.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਜਹਾਨ ਡੁੱਬ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

Without the Guru, the world is drowning. ||2||

ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

First Mehl:

ਦਸਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਬੱਚਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਵੀਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੁਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੀਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਹਣਾ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome.

ਚਾਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਹ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੈਰ ਪਿਛੇ ਮੁੜ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਠਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਧ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips, and at sixty, old age is upon him.

ਸੱਤਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਮਾਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਸੀ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।

At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties.

ਨੱਬੇ ਸਾਲ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਸਣ ਮੰਜੇ ਤੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਮਜੋਰ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਮੂਲੋਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕਿ ਤਾਕਤ ਕੀ ਹੈ।

At ninety, he lies in his bed, and he cannot understand his weakness.

ਖੋਜ ਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਧੂਏਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਹੈ।

After seeking and searching for such a long time, O Nanak, I have seen that the world is just a mansion of smoke. ||3||

ਪਊੜੀ।

Pauree:

ਤੂੰ, ਹੇ ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਵਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ! ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਆਲਮ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ।

You, O Creator Lord, are Unfathomable. You Yourself created the Universe,

ਖਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਤ੍ਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਰਚਨਾ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰੰਗਤਾ, ਵਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਭਾਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਜੀ ਹੈ।

its colors, qualities and varieties, in so many ways and forms.

ਤੂੰ ਹੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਖੇਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

You created it, and You alone understand it. It is all Your Play.

ਕਈ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਈ ਖੜੇ ਹੋ ਟੂਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਸਮੂਹ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Some come, and some arise and depart; but without the Name, all are bound to die.

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਰਪਣਾ ਦੀ ਪੋਸਤ ਦੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਵਰਗੀ ਭਾਹ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਰੰਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।

The Gurmukhs are imbued with the deep crimson color of the poppy; they are dyed in the color of the Lord's Love.

ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾ ਜੋ ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਵਾਨ ਤੇ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਦਾ ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਹੈ।

So serve the True and Pure Lord, the Supremely Powerful Architect of Destiny.

ਤੂੰ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈਂ ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਰਮ-ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਸ਼ਖਸੀਅਤ ਹੈ।

You Yourself are All-knowing. O Lord, You are the Greatest of the Great!

ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਤੇ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਹੜੇ, ਹੇ ਮੈਡੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ! ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਡੇਰਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

O my True Lord, I am a sacrifice, a humble sacrifice, to those who meditate on You within their conscious mind. ||1||

ਸਲੋਕ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Salok, First Mehl:

ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਪਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਕੀਤਾ।

He placed the soul in the body which He had fashioned. He protects the Creation which He has created.

ਆਦਮੀ ਆਪਣਿਆਂ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਾ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।

With their eyes, they see, and with their tongues, they speak; with their ears, they bring the mind to awareness.

ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਤੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

With their feet, they walk, and with their hands, they work; they wear and eat whatever is given.

ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਬਨਾਵਟ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ! ਮੁਨਾਖਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਲੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

They do not know the One who created the Creation. The blind fools do their dark deeds.

ਜਦ ਘੜਾ ਟੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਇਹ ਠੀਕਰੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਡੌਲ ਮੁੜ ਡੌਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।

When the pitcher of the body breaks and shatters into pieces, it cannot be re-created again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ, ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੁ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।

O Nanak, without the Guru, there is no honor; without honor, no one is carried across. ||1||

ਦੂਜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Second Mehl:

ਦਾਤੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਦਾਤ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕੂਲ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਸਮਝ।

They prefer the gift, instead of the Giver; such is the way of the self-willed manmukhs.

ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀ, ਸਮਝ ਅਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਤੇ ਕਥਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ?

What can anyone say about their intelligence, their understanding or their cleverness?

ਅਮਲ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਚਾਰੀ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

The deeds which one commits, while sitting in one's own home, are known far and wide, in the four directions.

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਨੇਕੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨੇਕ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੁਨਾਹਗਾਰ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner.

ਤੂੰ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਮੂਹ, ਖੇਡ ਰਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ! ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਗੱਲ ਤੇ ਕਥਾ ਕਰੀਏ?

You Yourself enact the entire play, O Creator. Why should we speak of any other?

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਦ ਤੋੜੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦੇਹਿ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਤੋੜੀ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਵਾਨ ਦੇਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਵਿਖਾਲ ਦੇਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਕੁਝ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਕਹਾਂਗਾ।

As long as Your Light is within the body, You speak through that Light. Without Your Light, who can do anything? Show me any such cleverness!

ਨਾਨਕ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੋ ਇਕਲਾ ਹੀ ਕਾਮਲ ਤੇ ਸਰਬੱਗ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the Lord alone is Perfect and All-knowing; He is revealed to the Gurmukh. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ।

Pauree:

ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੰਮੀ ਕਾਜੀਂ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself put it to work.

ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੀ ਨਸ਼ੀਲੀ ਬੂਟੀ ਖਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਛਡਿਆ ਹੈ।

Administering the drug of emotional attachment, You Yourself have led the world astray.

ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰਵਾਰ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਭੁੱਖਾ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਸਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The fire of desire is deep within; unsatisfied, people remain hungry and thirsty.

ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਿਅਕ ਗਲਤ-ਫਹਿਮੀ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ। ਇਹ ਮਰਦਾ, ਜੰਮਦਾ, ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation.

ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਲਗਨ ਟੁਟਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਸਾਰੇ ਜਣੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਾਰ ਹੁਟ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals.

ਜਦ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਤਾਬੇ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਧ੍ਰਾਪ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those who follow the Guru's Teachings meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Filled with a joyful peace, they surrender to Your Will.

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਵੰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਅ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੁਬਾਰਕ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

They save their families and ancestors; blessed are the mothers who gave birth to them.
