ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ. ਕਾਜਲ ਕੋਠੜੀ; ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਹ. ਸੁਆਹਿ ॥
sabh jag. kaajal kottharree; tan man deh. suaaeh |
ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਾਲਖ ਦੀ ਕੁਟੀਆ ਹੈ। ਸਰੀਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜਿਸਮ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The whole world is a store-house of lamp-black; the body and mind are blackened with it.
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ; ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੭॥
gur raakhe se niramale; sabad nivaaree bhaeh |7|
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਝਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who are saved by the Guru are immaculate and pure; through the Word of the Shabad, they extinguish the fire of desire. ||7||
ਨਾਨਕ. ਤਰੀਐ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ; ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ, ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰਲੇ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, they swim across with the True Name of the Lord, the King above the heads of kings.
ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ. ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ; ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਂ ਭੁੱਲੇ, ਮੈਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਖਰੀਦ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
May I never forget the Name of the Lord! I have purchased the Jewel of the Lord's Name.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ; ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੇ ਅਥਾਹੁ ॥੮॥੧੬॥

ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਭੈਦਾਇਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਗਲ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਮਰਪਣ ਅਗਾਧ ਸਾਗਰ (ਸੰਸਰ) ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in the terrifying world-ocean, while the Gurmukhs cross over the bottomless ocean. ||8||16||

Siree Raag, First Mehl, Second House:
ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਣਾ; ਨਿਤ ਚਲਣੈ ਕੀ ਧੋਖ ॥
mukaam kar ghar baisanaa; nit chalanai kee dhokh |
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਠਹਿਰਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਕਾਨ ਤੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਧੁਖਧੁਖੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
They have made this their resting place and they sit at home, but the urge to depart is always there.
ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ; ਜਾ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਲੋਕ ॥੧॥
mukaam taa par jaaneeai; jaa rahai nihachal lok |1|
ਜੇਕਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸਥਿਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ, ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਮੁਸਤਕਿਲ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਜਾਣੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਸੀ।
This would be known as a lasting place of rest, only if they were to remain stable and unchanging. ||1||
ਦੁਨੀਆ; ਕੈਸਿ ਮੁਕਾਮੇ ॥

ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਿਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਠਹਿਰਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਹੈ?
What sort of a resting place is this world?
ਕਰਿ ਸਿਦਕੁ, ਕਰਣੀ ਖਰਚੁ ਬਾਧਹੁ; ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੁ ਨਾਮੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਦੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸਫਰ-ਖਰਚ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੁ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
Doing deeds of faith, pack up the supplies for your journey, and remain committed to the Name. ||1||Pause||
ਜੋਗੀ ਤ ਆਸਣੁ ਕਰਿ ਬਹੈ; ਮੁਲਾ ਬਹੈ ਮੁਕਾਮਿ ॥
jogee ta aasan kar bahai; mulaa bahai mukaam |
ਯੋਗੀ ਧਿਆਨ-ਅਵਸਥਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਲਾ ਆਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Yogis sit in their Yogic postures, and the Mullahs sit at their resting stations.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ; ਸਿਧ ਬਹਹਿ ਦੇਵ ਸਥਾਨਿ ॥੨॥

ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਵਾਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Hindu Pandits recite from their books, and the Siddhas sit in the temples of their gods. ||2||
ਸੁਰ ਸਿਧ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ, ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ; ਸੇਖ ਪੀਰ ਸਲਾਰ ॥

ਦੇਵਤੇ, ਪੂਰਨ-ਪੁਰਸ਼, ਸ਼ਿਵਜੀ ਦੇ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਕ, ਸਵਰਗ ਦੇ ਗਵਈਏ, ਚੁੱਪ ਕੀਤੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ, ਸਾਧੂ ਮਜ਼ਹਬੀ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਕ, ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਰਹਿਬਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੈਨਾਪਤੀ,
The angels, Siddhas, worshippers of Shiva, heavenly musicians, silent sages, Saints, priests, preachers, spiritual teachers and commanders
ਦਰਿ ਕੂਚ ਕੂਚਾ ਕਰਿ ਗਏ; ਅਵਰੇ ਭਿ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ॥੩॥
dar kooch koochaa kar ge; avare bhi chalanahaar |3|
ਸਮੂਹ ਦਰਜਾ-ਬ-ਦਰਜਾ ਟੁਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੂਚ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤਾਬੇ ਹਨ।
-each and every one has left, and all others shall depart as well. ||3||
ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਮਲੂਕ ਉਮਰੇ; ਗਏ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕੂਚੁ ॥
sulataan khaan malook umare; ge kar kar kooch |
ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ, ਮੁਸਨਬਦਾਰ, ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਤੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਇਕ-ਇਕ ਕਰਕੇ ਟੁਰਦੇ ਬਣੇ ਹਨ।
The sultans and kings, the rich and the mighty, have marched away in succession.
ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ. ਚਲਣਾ; ਦਿਲ ਸਮਝੁ. ਤੂੰ ਭਿ ਪਹੂਚੁ ॥੪॥
gharree muhat ki. chalanaa; dil samajh. toon bhi pahooch |4|
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਜਾਂ ਦੋ ਵਿੱਚ ਟੁਰਨਾ ਪਏਗਾ। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ ਜਾਣ ਲੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਉਥੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
In a moment or two, we shall also depart. O my heart, understand that you must go as well! ||4||
ਸਬਦਾਹ ਮਾਹਿ, ਵਖਾਣੀਐ; ਵਿਰਲਾ ਤ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabadaah maeh, vakhaaneeai; viralaa ta boojhai koe |
ਇਲਾਹੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ।
This is described in the Shabads; only a few understand this!
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬੇਨਤੀ; ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
naanak vakhaanai benatee; jal thal maheeal soe |5|
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਸੁੱਕੀ ਧਰਤੀ, ਪਾਤਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
Nanak offers this prayer to the One who pervades the water, the land and the air. ||5||
ਅਲਾਹੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਕਾਦਰੁ; ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰੀਮੁ ॥
alaahu alakh agam kaadar; karanahaar kareem |
ਉਹ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ, ਅਖੋਜ, ਅਪਹੁੰਚ, ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਮਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਦਰਿਆ-ਦਿਲ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।
He is Allah, the Unknowable, the Inaccessible, All-powerful and Merciful Creator.
ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣੀ; ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਰਹੀਮੁ ॥੬॥
sabh dunee aavan jaavanee; mukaam ek raheem |6|
ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੈ। ਕੇਵਲ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੀ ਮੁਸਤਕਿਲ ਹੈ।
All the world comes and goes-only the Merciful Lord is permanent. ||6||
ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ; ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਸਿ. ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
mukaam tis no aakheeai; jis sis. na hovee lekh |
ਮੁਸਤਕਿਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੁ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਭਾਵੀ ਦੀ ਲਿਖਤਾਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ।
Call permanent only the One, who does not have destiny inscribed upon His Forehead.
ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਚਲਸੀ; ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਓਹੀ ਏਕੁ ॥੭॥
asamaan dharatee chalasee; mukaam ohee ek |7|
ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਜਮੀਨ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਣਗੇ, ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸਥਿਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
The sky and the earth shall pass away; He alone is permanent. ||7||
ਦਿਨ ਰਵਿ ਚਲੈ, ਨਿਸਿ ਸਸਿ ਚਲੈ; ਤਾਰਿਕਾ ਲਖ ਪਲੋਇ ॥
din rav chalai, nis sas chalai; taarikaa lakh paloe |
ਦਿਹੁੰ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਣਗੇ, ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾਂ ਗਾਇਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਤਾਰੇ ਅਲੋਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ।
The day and the sun shall pass away; the night and the moon shall pass away; the hundreds of thousands of stars shall disappear.
ਮੁਕਾਮੁ. ਓਹੀ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ; ਨਾਨਕਾ. ਸਚੁ ਬੁਗੋਇ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
mukaam. ohee ek hai; naanakaa. sach bugoe |8|17|
ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਅਨੰਤ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਸੱਚ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
He alone is permanent; Nanak speaks the Truth. ||8||17||

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿ੍ਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ. ਭਗਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ; ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ. ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
guramukh kripaa kare. bhagat keejai; bin gur. bhagat na hoe |
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਪਰੇਮ ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
By God's Grace, the Gurmukh practices devotion; without the Guru, there is no devotional worship.
ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਬੂਝੈ; ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
aapai aap milaae boojhai; taa niramal hovai koe |
ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ, ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤਦ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
One who merges his own self into Him understands, and so becomes pure.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਚਾ. ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ; ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
har jeeo sachaa. sachee baanee; sabad milaavaa hoe |1|
ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਪੂਜਯ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ। ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Dear Lord is True, and True is the Word of His Bani. Through the Word of the Shabad, Union with Him is obtained. ||1||
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ. ਭਗਤਿਹੀਣੁ; ਕਾਹੇ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
bhaaee re. bhagatiheen; kaahe jag aaeaa |
ਹੈ ਵੀਰ! ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ?
O Siblings of Destiny, without devotion, why have people even come into the world?
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ. ਸੇਵ ਨ ਕੀਨੀ; ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
poore gur kee. sev na keenee; birathaa janam gavaaeaa |1| rahaau |
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਮਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬੇ-ਫਾਇਦਾ ਗੁਆ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
They have not served the Perfect Guru; they have wasted their lives in vain. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ; ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aape har jagajeevan daataa; aape bakhas milaae |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, ਦਾਤਾਰ, ਖੁਦ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ-ਜਾਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਫੀ ਦੇ ਕੇ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord Himself, the Life of the World, is the Giver. He Himself forgives, and unites us with Himself.
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਏ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਚਾਰੇ; ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
jeea jant e kiaa vechaare; kiaa ko aakh sunaae |
ਕੀ ਹਨ ਇਹ ਗਰੀਬ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਧਾਰੀ? ਉਹ ਕੀ ਕਹਿ ਤੇ ਸਮਝ ਸੁਣਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ?
What are these poor beings and creatures? What can they speak and say?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ; ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੨॥

ਸਾਧੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਮਾਣ-ਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼ਟਾ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
God Himself grants glory to the Gurmukhs; He joins them to His Service. ||2||
ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੋਭਾਣਾ; ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ. ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
