ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ; ਧੀਆ ਪੂਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥

ਕੁਮਾਰਗੀ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ, ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਨਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਦੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਕਹਿਕੇ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
The self-willed manmukh looks upon his daughters, sons and relatives as his own.
ਨਾਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ. ਵਿਗਾਸੀਅਹਿ; ਨਾਲੇ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਗਮੀ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Gazing upon his wife, he is pleased. But along with happiness, they bring grief.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੇ; ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥੩॥

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਦਿੰਹੁ ਰੈਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Gurmukhs are attuned to the Word of the Shabad. Day and night, they enjoy the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3||
ਚਿਤੁ ਚਲੈ. ਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਵਣੋ; ਸਾਕਤ ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥

ਅਸਥਿਰ ਤੇ ਡਿੱਕ-ਡੋਲੇ ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੁਮਾਰਗੀ ਦਾ ਮਨੂਆ ਛਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
The consciousness of the wicked, faithless cynics wanders around in search of transitory wealth, unstable and distracted.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ; ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥
baahar dtoondt vigucheeai; ghar meh vasat suthaae |
ਜਦ ਕਿ ਸ਼ੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਆਦਮੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਾਹਰਵਾਰ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Searching outside of themselves, they are ruined; the object of their search is in that sacred place within the home of the heart.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ. ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਸੀ; ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਝੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਦ ਕਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗੀ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The self-willed manmukhs, in their ego, miss it; the Gurmukhs receive it in their laps. ||4||
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰਿਆ; ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
saakat niraguniaariaa; aapanaa mool pachhaan |
ਹੇ ਗੁਣ-ਵਿਹੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਕ! ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਦੀ ਸਿੰਞਾਣ ਕਰ।
You worthless, faithless cynic-recognize your own origin!
ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੋ; ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣੁ ॥
rakat bind kaa ihu tano; aganee paas piraan |
ਇਹ ਦੇਹਿ ਲਹੂ ਤੇ ਵੀਰਜ ਤੋਂ ਬਣੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਅੱਗ ਕੋਲਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਈ (ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ) ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।
This body is made of blood and semen. It shall be consigned to the fire in the end.
ਪਵਣੈ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ; ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੫॥
pavanai kai vas dehuree; masatak sach neesaan |5|
ਮਥੇ ਉਪਰਲੇ ਸਚੇ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਭਾਵੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁਆਸ ਦੇ ਅਖਤਿਆਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।
The body is under the power of the breath, according to the True Sign inscribed upon your forehead. ||5||
ਬਹੁਤਾ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ; ਮੁਆ. ਨ ਲੋੜੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
bahutaa jeevan mangeeai; muaa. na lorrai koe |
ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਲੰਮੀ ਆਰਬਲਾ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਰਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ।
Everyone begs for a long life-no one wishes to die.
ਸੁਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ; ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
sukh jeevan tis aakheeai; jis guramukh vasiaa soe |
ਆਰਾਮ-ਦਿਹ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਕਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
A life of peace and comfort comes to that Gurmukh, within whom God dwells.
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ; ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ, ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
naam vihoone kiaa ganee; jis har gur daras, na hoe |6|
ਕਿਹੜੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਪਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੋ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
Without the Naam, what good those who do not have the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of the Lord and Guru? ||6||
ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ; ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
jiau supanai nis bhuleeai; jab lag nidraa hoe |
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਦ ਤੋੜੀ ਨੀਦਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਭੁਲਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
In their dreams at night, people wander around as long as they sleep;
ਇਉ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਜੀਅੜਾ; ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥
eiau sarapan kai vas jeearraa; antar haumai doe |
ਏਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਔਕੜਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੱਪਣੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।
just so, they are under the power of the snake Maya, as long as their hearts are filled with ego and duality.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ; ਸੁਪਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਲੋਇ ॥੭॥
guramat hoe veechaareeai; supanaa ihu jag loe |7|
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
Through the Guru's Teachings, they come to understand and see that this world is just a dream. ||7||
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ. ਜਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ; ਜਿਉ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਦੂਧੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
agan marai. jal paaeeai; jiau baarik doodhai maae |
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਅਗ ਬੁਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਨਾਲ ਬੱਚਾ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
As thirst is quenched with water, and the baby is satisfied with mother's milk,
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ. ਕਮਲ ਸੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ; ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ. ਮੀਨੁ ਮਰਾਇ ॥
bin jal. kamal su naa theeai; bin jal. meen maraae |
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਕੰਵਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
and as the lotus does not exist without water, and as the fish dies without water
ਨਾਨਕ. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ; ਜੀਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੫॥
naanak. guramukh har ras milai; jeevaa har gun gaae |8|15|
ਏਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ, ਨਾਨਕ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
-O Nanak, so does the Gurmukh live, receiving the Sublime Essence of the Lord, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||15||

ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ; ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡਰੀਆਸੁ ॥
ddoongar dekh ddaraavano; peeearrai ddareeaas |
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੇਕੇ ਘਰ (ਦੁਨੀਆਂ) ਵਿੱਚ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਪਹਾੜ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਕੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ।
Beholding the terrifying mountain in this world of my father's home, I am terrified.
ਊਚਉ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਗਾਖੜੋ; ਨਾ ਪਉੜੀ. ਤਿਤੁ ਤਾਸੁ ॥
aoochau parabat gaakharro; naa paurree. tith taas |
ਉਚਾ ਅਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਨੂੰ ਔਖਾ ਹੇ ਪਹਾੜ। ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਲਈ ਉਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੀੜ੍ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
It is so difficult to climb this high mountain; there is no ladder which reaches up there.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ; ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਰੀਆਸੁ ॥੧॥
guramukh antar jaaniaa; gur melee tareeaas |1|
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਪਹਾੜ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।
But as Gurmukh, I know that it is within my self; the Guru has brought me to Union, and so I cross over. ||1||
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ; ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਂਉ ॥
bhaaee re; bhavajal bikham ddaraanau |
ਹੇ ਵੀਰ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕਠਨ ਤੇ ਭੈ-ਭੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
O Siblings of Destiny, the terrifying world-ocean is so difficult to cross-I am terrified!
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ; ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pooraa satigur ras milai; gur taare har naau |1| rahaau |
ਆਪਣੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੰਦ-ਖਲਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
The Perfect True Guru, in His Pleasure, has met with me; the Guru has saved me, through the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਚਲਾ ਚਲਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ; ਜਾਣਾ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
chalaa chalaa je karee; jaanaa chalanahaar |
ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਕਹਾਂ, "ਮੈ ਟੁਰ ਤੇ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ", ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਅਸਲੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕੂਚ ਕਰ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
I may say, "I am going, I am going", but I know that, in the end, I must really go.
ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ; ਅਮਰੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
jo aaeaa so chalasee; amar su gur karataar |
ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਏਗਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਤਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਸਦੀਵ ਸਥਿਰ ਹਨ।
Whoever comes must also go. Only the Guru and the Creator are Eternal.
ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ; ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
bhee sachaa saalaahanaa; sachai thaan piaar |2|
ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਸਾ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਪਾ।
So praise the True One continually, and love His Place of Truth. ||2||
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ; ਪਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਹਜਾਰ ॥
dar ghar mahalaa sohane; pake kott hajaar |
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ, ਮਕਾਨ ਮੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਹਜਾਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੁਖਤਾਂ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ,
Beautiful gates, houses and palaces, solidly built forts,
ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰੇ; ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
hasatee ghorre paakhare; lasakar lakh apaar |
ਹਾਥੀ ਕਾਠੀਆਂ ਸਣੇ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਫੌਜਾਂ,
elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ. ਨ ਚਲਿਆ; ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥
kis hee naal. na chaliaa; khap khap mue asaar |3|
ਇਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੂਰਖ ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਪਤੀ ਹੋ, ਓੜਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
-none of these will go along with anyone in the end, and yet, the fools bother themselves to exhaustion with these, and then die. ||3||
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ; ਮਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥
sueinaa rupaa sancheeai; maal jaal janjaal |
ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸੋਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਜਮ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰ ਲਵੇ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਦੌਲਤ ਇਕ ਫਸਾ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਹੈ।
You may gather gold and sliver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement.
ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਫੇਰੀਐ; ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ. ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
sabh jag meh dohee fereeai; bin naavai. sir kaal |
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦਾ ਢੰਡੋਰਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੁਆ ਦੇਵੇ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਖੜੀ ਹੈ।
You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Name, death hovers over your head.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ. ਜੀਉ ਖੇਲਸੀ; ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੪॥
pindd parrai. jeeo khelasee; badafailee kiaa haal |4|
ਜਦ ਦੇਹਿ ਡਿਗ ਪੈਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਮੁਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਦੋਂ ਬਦਮਾਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੀ ਦਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੋਏਗੀ?
When the body falls, the play of life is over; what shall be the condition of the evil-doers then? ||4||
ਪੁਤਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੀਐ; ਨਾਰੀ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰ ॥

ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਲੰਘ ਉਤੇ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਪਤੀ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The husband is delighted seeing his sons, and his wife upon his bed.
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ; ਕਾਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

ਉਹ ਊਦ ਦੀ ਲੱਕੜੀ ਤੇ ਚੰਨਣ ਦਾ ਅਤਰ ਮਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
He applies sandalwood and scented oils, and dresses himself in his beautiful clothes.
ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਈਐ; ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
khehoo kheh ralaaeeai; chhodd chalai ghar baar |5|
ਆਪਣਾ ਝੁੱਗਾ-ਝਾਹਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
But dust shall mix with dust, and he shall depart, leaving hearth and home behind. ||5||
ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਈਐ; ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਉ ਕਿ ਖਾਨੁ ॥
mehar malook kahaaeeai; raajaa raau ki khaan |
ਉਹ ਸਰਦਾਰ, ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ, ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ, ਸੂਬਾ, ਜਾਂ ਮਨਸਬਦਾਰ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ।
He may be called a chief, an emperor, a king, a governor or a lord;
ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਉ ਸਦਾਈਐ; ਜਲਿ ਬਲੀਐ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥
chaudharee raau sadaaeeai; jal baleeai abhimaan |
ਉਹ ਮੁਖੀਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਨਵਾਬ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਇਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੜਨਾ ਤੇ ਮੱਚਣਾ ਹੈ।
he may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ. ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ; ਜਿਉ. ਡਵਿ ਦਧਾ ਕਾਨੁ ॥੬॥

ਕੁਮਾਰਗੀ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਨੇ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਜੰਗਲ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ ਸੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਾਨੇ ਦੀ ਮਾਨਿੰਦ ਹੈ।
The self-willed manmukh has forgotten the Naam. He is like straw, burning in the forest fire. ||6||
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ; ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
haumai kar kar jaaeisee; jo aaeaa jag maeh |
ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਬੁਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੰਮੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਜਬੂਰੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਏਗਾ।
Whoever comes into the world and indulges in ego, must depart.
