Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਜੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਹੈ।

As is their awareness, so is their way.

ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੀ) ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

According to the account of our actions, we come and go in reincarnation. ||1||

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?

Why, O soul, do you try such clever tricks?

ਵਾਪਸ ਲੈਣ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ! ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Taking away and giving back, God does not delay. ||1||Pause||

ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ (ਮਾਲਕ) ਹੈਂ।

All beings belong to You; all beings are Yours. O Lord and Master,

ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਤੂੰ ਤਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ?

how can You become angry with them?

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਗੁੰਸਾ ਭੀ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਹੇ ਸਾਈਂ!

Even if You, O Lord and Master, become angry with them,

ਫਿਰ ਭੀ, ਤੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ।

still, You are theirs, and they are Yours. ||2||

ਆਪਾਂ ਬਦਜ਼ਬਾਨ, (ਆਪਦੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਹੀਣ) ਬਚਨਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਖ਼ਰਾਬ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

We are foul-mouthed; we spoil everything with our foul words.

ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿਗ੍ਹਾ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ (ਮੁੱਲ) ਜੋਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ।

You weigh us in the balance of Your Glance of Grace.

ਜਿਥੇ ਅਮਲ ਨੇਕ ਹਨ ਉਥੇ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ ਹੈ।

When one's actions are right, the understanding is perfect.

ਚੰਗੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਹੈ।

Without good deeds, it becomes more and more deficient. ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਕੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਹੈ?

Prays Nanak, what is the nature of the spiritual people?

ਉਹ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਞਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।

They are self-realized; they understand God.

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੇਤਾ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਯਾ ਦੁਆਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

By Guru's Grace, they contemplate Him;

ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

such spiritual people are honored in His Court. ||4||30||

ਸਿਰੀ ਰਾਗ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Siree Raag, First Mehl, Fourth House:

ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦੇਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਰਿਆ ਹੈਂ। ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਮੱਛੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਓੜਕ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ?

You are the River, All-knowing and All-seeing. I am just a fish-how can I find Your limit?

ਜਿਧਰ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਓਥੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਾਟ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ।

Wherever I look, You are there. Outside of You, I would burst and die. ||1||

ਮੈਂ ਮਾਹੀਗੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਜਾਲ ਨੂੰ।

I do not know of the fisherman, and I do not know of the net.

ਜਦ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਵਾਪਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਯਾਂਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

But when the pain comes, then I call upon You. ||1||Pause||

ਤੂੰ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

You are present everywhere. I had thought that You were far away.

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਝ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।

Whatever I do, I do in Your Presence.

ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਅਮਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਮੈਂ ਇਨਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ।

You see all my actions, and yet I deny them.

ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਘਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਮਾਈ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

I have not worked for You, or Your Name. ||2||

ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ।

Whatever You give me, that is what I eat.

ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਬੂਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਵਾਂ?

There is no other door-unto which door should I go?

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

Nanak offers this one prayer:

ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਮੂਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ।

this body and soul are totally Yours. ||3||

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ, ਆਪੇ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਅਧ-ਵਿਚਕਾਰ।

He Himself is near, and He Himself is far away; He Himself is in-between.

ਆਪੇ ਉਹ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੀ ਸਤਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਹੈ।

He Himself beholds, and He Himself listens. By His Creative Power, He created the world.

ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਣ ਪਰਮਾਣੀਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Whatever pleases Him, O Nanak-that Command is acceptable. ||4||31||

ਸਿਰੀ ਰਾਗ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Siree Raag, First Mehl, Fourth House:

ਰਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਰੇਂ?

Why should the created beings feel pride in their minds?

ਦਾਤ ਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।

The Gift is in the Hands of the Great Giver.

ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਦੇਵੇ ਜਾਂ ਨਾਂ ਦੇਵੇ।

As it pleases Him, He may give, or not give.

ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਦੇ ਆਖਣ ਤੇ ਕੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

What can be done by the order of the created beings? ||1||

ਸੱਚਾ ਉਹ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੱਚ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself is True; Truth is pleasing to His Will.

ਆਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਿਕੰਮਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ) ਨਿਕੰਮਿਆਂ ਤੌਂ ਨਿਕੰਮਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

The spiritually blind are unripe and imperfect, inferior and worthless. ||1||Pause||

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਵਣ ਦੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਛ, ਬਾਗ ਤੇ ਬੂਟੇ ਹਨ,

The One who owns the trees of the forest and the plants of the garden

ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਐਸੇ ਨਾਮ, ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਮਾਂਦਰੂ ਖ਼ਸਲਤ ਹੈ।

according to their nature, He gives them all their names.

ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਲਭਧ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦਾ ਪੁਸ਼ਪ ਤੇ ਮੇਵਾ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Flower and the Fruit of the Lord's Love are obtained by pre-ordained destiny.

ਉਹ ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ (ਵੱਢਦਾ) ਜਾ (ਖਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ।

As we plant, so we harvest and eat. ||2||

ਆਰਜ਼ੀ ਹੈ (ਦੇਹਿ ਰੂਪੀ) ਦੀਵਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਜ਼ੀ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਭਉਰ,

The wall of the body is temporary, as is the soul-mason within it.

ਮਿਸਤਰੀ ਲੂਣ (ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ) ਤੋਂ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਹੈ।

The flavor of the intellect is bland and insipid without the Salt.

ਜੇਕਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ!

O Nanak, as He wills, He makes things right.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਾਝੌਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਮਵਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ।

Without the Name, no one is approved. ||3||32||

ਸਿਰੀ ਰਾਗ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Siree Raag, First Mehl, Fifth House:

ਨ ਠੱਗੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਠੱਗਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਠੱਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਖੰਜਰ (ਇਸ ਉਤੇ) ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਲਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

The Undeceiveable is not deceived by deception. He cannot be wounded by any dagger.

ਜਿਵੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਉਵੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠਾਂ) ਇਸ ਲਾਲਚੀ-ਬੰਦੇ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਡਿੱਕੋ-ਡੋਲੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

As our Lord and Master keeps us, so do we exist. The soul of this greedy person is tossed this way and that. ||1||

ਤੇਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੀਵਾ ਕਿੇਵ ਬਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Without the oil, how can the lamp be lit? ||1||Pause||

ਧਾਰਮਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਠ ਦੇ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਦਾ

Let the reading of your prayer book be the oil,

ਤੇਲ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਬੱਤੀ ਇਸ ਦੇਹਿ (ਦੇ ਦੀਵੇ) ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ।

And let the Fear of God be the wick for the lamp of this body.

ਸੱਚ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਦੀਵੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਲ।

Light this lamp with the understanding of Truth. ||2||

ਇਸ ਤੇਲ ਨਾਲ ਇੰਞ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਦੀਵਾ ਬਲੇਗਾ।

Use this oil to light this lamp.

ਅਜੇਹਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰ, ਤਦ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਵੇਗਾ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Light it, and meet your Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||

ਜਦ (ਨਾਮ ਰੂਪੀ) ਬਾਣੀ ਇਸ ਦੇਹ-ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,

This body is softened with the Word of the Guru's Bani;

ਅਤੇ ਘਾਲ ਕਮਾਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।

you shall find peace, doing seva (selfless service).
