ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਇਕ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜ ਲਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਤਮ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਸ ਮਗਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਨੱਸੇ?
If you focus your consciousness on the Feet of the One Lord, what reason would you have to chase after greed? ||3||
ਜਪਸਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ; ਰਚਸਿ ਮਨਾ ॥

ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਵਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਤੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।
Meditate on the Immaculate Lord, and saturate your mind with Him.
ਕਾਹੇ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ; ਕਪਟੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਤੂੰ ਐਨਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਛਲ ਫਰੇਬ ਕਿਉਂ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਹੇ ਯੋਗੀ? ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
Why, O Yogi, do you make so many false and deceptive claims? ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਇਆ ਕਮਲੀ. ਹੰਸੁ ਇਆਣਾ; ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਣੀਤਾ ॥

ਦੇਹਿ ਪਗਲੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੂਆਂ ਮੂਰਖ। ਤੇਰੀ ਆਰਬਲਾ ਮੈਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
The body is wild, and the mind is foolish. Practicing egotism, selfishness and conceit, your life is passing away.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ. ਨਾਗੀ ਦਾਝੈ; ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ. ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀਤਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੫॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ: ਜਦ ਨੰਗੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਸਚਾਤਾਪ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Prays Nanak, when the naked body is cremated, then you will come to regret and repent. ||4||3||15||

ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਪੱਕੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੋੜ ਲਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਲਵੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਹਰ ਰੋਗ ਦੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਜਾਦੂ ਟੁਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਜੜੀ ਬੂਟੀ ਹੈ।
O mind, there is only the One medicine, mantra and healing herb - center your consciousness firmly on the One Lord.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ. ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਕੇ; ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
janam janam ke. paap karam ke; kaattanahaaraa leejai re |1|
ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਉਸ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ, ਜੋ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਸਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
Take to the Lord, the Destroyer of the sins and karma of past incarnations. ||1||
ਮਨ; ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥

ਮੇਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
The One Lord and Master is pleasing to my mind.
ਤੇਰੇ ਤੀਨਿ ਗੁਣਾ, ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ; ਅਲਖੁ. ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਖਾਸੀਅਤਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਗਤ ਖਚਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਨਾਂ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ! ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
In Your three qualities, the world is engrossed; the Unknowable cannot be known. ||1||Pause||
ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠੀ; ਹਮ ਤਉ ਪੰਡ ਉਚਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
sakar khandd maaeaa tan meetthee; ham tau pandd uchaaee re |
ਸ਼ਕਰ ਤੇ ਚੀਨੀ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਦਾ ਬੋਝ ਚੁਕਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
Maya is so sweet to the body, like sugar or molasses. We all carry loads of it.
ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨੇਰੀ. ਸੂਝਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ; ਲਜੁ ਟੂਕਸਿ ਮੂਸਾ. ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੨॥

ਅੰਧੇਰੀ ਰੈਛਿ ਫਿਰ ਕੁਝ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਚੂਹਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰੱਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਤਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਹੇ ਵੀਰ!
In the dark of the night, nothing can be seen. The mouse of death is gnawing away at the rope of life, O Siblings of Destiny! ||2||
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ. ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ; ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
manamukh kareh. tetaa dukh laagai; guramukh milai vaddaaee re |
ਜਿੰਨਾ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕੂਲ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਆਪ ਮੁਹਾਰਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਨੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
As the self-willed manmukhs act, they suffer in pain. The Gurmukh obtains honor and greatness.
ਜੋ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ. ਸੋਈ ਹੋਆ; ਕਿਰਤੁ. ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
jo tin keea. soee hoaa; kirat. na mettiaa jaaee re |3|
ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕਰਮ ਮੇਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
Whatever He does, that alone happens; past actions cannot be erased. ||3||
ਸੁਭਰ ਭਰੇ. ਨ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਊਣੇ; ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
subhar bhare. na hoveh aoone; jo raate rang laaee re |
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਰੀ-ਪੂਰਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਾੜੇ ਮੋਟੇ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।
Those who are imbued with, and committed to the Lord's Love, are filled to overflowing; they never lack anything.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਪੰਕ ਹੋਵੈ. ਜੇ ਨਾਨਕੁ; ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ. ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੬॥

ਜੇਕਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ।
If Nanak could be the dust of their feet, then he, the ignorant one, might also obtain some. ||4||4||16||

ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਂ, ਕਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਿੳ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ?
Who is our mother, and who is our father? Where did we come from?
ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿੰਬ ਜਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਿਪਜੇ; ਕਾਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥੧॥

ਅਗ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਤੁਪਕੇ ਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ। ਕਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਜਨ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਰਚੇ ਗਏ ਸਾਂ?
We are formed from the fire of the womb within, and the bubble of water of the sperm. For what purpose are we created? ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ; ਕਉਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ॥

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਖੂਬੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
O my Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?
ਕਹੇ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ; ਅਉਗਣ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
My own demerits cannot be counted. ||1||Pause||
ਕੇਤੇ ਰੁਖ ਬਿਰਖ. ਹਮ ਚੀਨੇ; ਕੇਤੇ ਪਸੂ ਉਪਾਏ ॥

ਅਸੀਂ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਦਰਖਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੌਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ (ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤੇ) ਅਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਾਰੀ ਡੰਗਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ।
I took the form of so many plants and trees, and so many animals.
ਕੇਤੇ. ਨਾਗ ਕੁਲੀ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ; ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਖ ਉਡਾਏ ॥੨॥

ਕਈ ਵਾਰੀ ਅਸਾਂ ਸਰਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰਾਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਵਾਰੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਜਨੌਰ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਉਡਾਏ ਗਏ।
Many times I entered the families of snakes and flying birds. ||2||
ਹਟ ਪਟਣ. ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਭੰਨੈ; ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ. ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

ਆਦਮੀ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੁਕਾਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਜਬੂਤ ਮਹਿਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾੜ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
I broke into the shops of the city and well-guarded palaces; stealing from them, I snuck home again.
ਅਗਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ. ਪਿਛਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ; ਤੁਝ ਤੇ. ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਲੁਕਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
I looked in front of me, and I looked behind me, but where could I hide from You? ||3||
ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ. ਹਮ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਦੇਖੇ; ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰਾ ॥
tatt teerath. ham nav khandd dekhe; hatt pattan baajaaraa |
ਮੈਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ, ਨੌ ਖਿੱਤੇ ਹੱਟੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਪਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੇਂਦ੍ਰ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ।
I saw the banks of sacred rivers, the nine continents, the shops and bazaars of the cities.
ਲੈ ਕੈ ਤਕੜੀ. ਤੋਲਣਿ ਲਾਗਾ; ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੪॥

ਤਰਾਜੂ ਲੈ ਕੇ, ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਮਲ ਜੋਖਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੇ।
Taking the scale, the merchant begins to weigh his actions within his own heart. ||4||
ਜੇਤਾ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਭਰਿਆ; ਤੇਤੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
jetaa samund saagar neer bhariaa; tete aaugan hamaare |
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਐਨੇ ਅਮਾਪ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨਾ ਕੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਿੰਧ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਪਰੀ-ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
As the seas and the oceans are overflowing with water, so vast are my own sins.
ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ. ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਹਰ ਉਪਾਵਹੁ; ਡੁਬਦੇ ਪਥਰ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੫॥

ਤਰਸ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਕੁ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਗਰਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ, ਪਾਹਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਦੇ।
Please, shower me with Your Mercy, and take pity upon me. I am a sinking stone - please carry me across! ||5||
ਜੀਅੜਾ. ਅਗਨਿ ਬਰਾਬਰਿ ਤਪੈ; ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵਗੈ ਕਾਤੀ ॥
jeearraa. agan baraabar tapai; bheetar vagai kaatee |
ਆਦਮੀ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਵਾਙੂ ਮੱਚਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰਵਾਰ ਕੈਂਚੀ ਚਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
My soul is burning like fire, and the knife is cutting deep.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ. ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ; ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥੬॥੫॥੧੭॥

ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ, ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਞਾਣ ਲਵੇ, ਤਦ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਆਰਾਮ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
Prays Nanak, recognizing the Lord's Command, I am at peace, day and night. ||6||5||17||

ਇਨਸਾਨ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਰਾਤਾਂ ਸੋ ਕੇ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The nights are wasted sleeping, and the days are wasted eating.
ਹੀਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ; ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
heere jaisaa janam hai; kauddee badale jaae |1|
ਮਨੁਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕੌਡੀ ਦੇ ਵਟਾਦਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਲਿਆਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Human life is such a precious jewel, but it is being lost in exchange for a mere shell. ||1||
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ; ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥
naam na jaaniaa; raam kaa |
ਉਹ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
You do not know the Name of the Lord.
ਮੂੜੇ; ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਗਰੋ ਪਸਚਾਤਾਪ ਕਰੇਗਾ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
You fool - you shall regret and repent in the end! ||1||Pause||
ਅਨਤਾ ਧਨੁ. ਧਰਣੀ ਧਰੇ; ਅਨਤ ਨ ਚਾਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
anataa dhan. dharanee dhare; anat na chaahiaa jaae |
ਉਹ ਅਨਿੱਤ ਦੋਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਖ (ਦੱਬ) ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਅਨੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁਦਾ।
You bury your temporary wealth in the ground, but how can you love that which is temporary?
ਅਨਤ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਨ. ਜੋ ਗਏ; ਸੇ ਆਏ ਅਨਤ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥
anat kau chaahan. jo ge; se aae anat gavaae |2|
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਲਈ ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਟੁਰੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹੱਦਬੰਨਾ ਰਹਿਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਏ ਹਨ।
Those who have departed, after craving for temporary wealth, have returned home without this temporary wealth. ||2||
ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ; ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਠੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapan leea je milai; taa sabh ko bhaagatth hoe |
ਜੇਕਰ ਆਦਮੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਲੈਣ (ਯਤਨ) ਦੁਆਰਾ ਲੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੇ।
If people could gather it in by their own efforts, then everyone would be so lucky.
