ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਦੇਹਿ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਦੀ ਹਾਂ। ਮੇਰੀ ਨਸੀਹਤ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰ।
I say to you, O my body: listen to my advice!
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਚਿੰਦਾ. ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਾਈ; ਝੂਠੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੀ ॥
nindaa chindaa. kareh paraaee; jhootthee laaeitabaaree |
ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਦਖੋਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੂੜੀਆਂ ਚੁਗਲੀਆਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ।
You slander, and then praise others; you indulge in lies and gossip.
ਵੇਲਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ; ਕਰਹਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੀ ॥
vel paraaee joheh jeearre; kareh choree buriaaree |
ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਮਨ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਦੀ ਵੇਲ (ਤ੍ਰੀਮਤ) ਨੂੰ ਤਕਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਰਕਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
You gaze upon the wives of others, O my soul; you steal and commit evil deeds.
ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲਿਆ. ਤੂੰ ਪਿਛੈ ਰਹੀਏਹਿ; ਛੁਟੜਿ ਹੋਈਅਹਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

ਜਦ ਆਤਮਾ, ਰਾਜ ਹੰਸ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਮਗਰ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਛੱਡੀ ਹੋਈ ਤੀਵੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੇ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
But when the swan departs, you shall remain behind, like an abandoned woman. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਹੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰਿ; ਤੁਧੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

ਹੇ ਦੇਹਿ! ਤੂੰ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਸਦੀ ਹੈ। ਤੂੰ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਭਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
O body, you are living in a dream! What good deeds have you done?
ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ. ਮੈ ਜਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਆ; ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਲਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਤਸਕਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ ਲਿਆਂਦੀ ਤਦ ਇਹ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਾ।
When I stole something by deception, then my mind was pleased.
ਹਲਤਿ ਨ ਸੋਭਾ. ਪਲਤਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ; ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

ਇਸ ਮਾਤ ਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੋਈ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਪਨਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਭਣੀ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬੇਫਾਇਦਾ ਵੰਞ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
I have no honor in this world, and I shall find no shelter in the world hereafter. My life has been lost, wasted in vain! ||3||
ਹਉ ਖਰੀ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਹੋਈ, ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ; ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਤ. ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਪਿਤਾ। ਨਾਨਕ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ। ਠਹਿਰਾੳ।
I am totally miserable! O Baba Nanak, no one cares for me at all! ||1||Pause||
ਤਾਜੀ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ; ਕਪੜ ਕੇਰੇ ਭਾਰਾ ॥

ਤੁਰਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਕੋਤਲ ਸੋਨਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਸਤਰ ਦੇ ਢੇਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ।
Turkish horses, gold, silver and loads of gorgeous clothes
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ. ਨ ਚਲੇ ਨਾਨਕ; ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਏ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥

ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਏਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਪਿਛੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ।
- none of these shall go with you, O Nanak. They are lost and left behind, you fool!
ਕੂਜਾ ਮੇਵਾ. ਮੈ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ; ਇਕੁ ਅੰਮਿ੍ਰਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
koojaa mevaa. mai sabh kichh chaakhiaa; ik amrit naam tumaaraa |4|
ਕੂਜੇ ਦੀ ਮਿਸਰੀ ਤੇ ਸੌਗੀ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਚੱਖੇ ਹਨ। ਕੇਵਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸੁਧਾਰਸ ਜੈਸਾ ਮਿੱਠੜਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸੂਆਮੀ!।
I have tasted all the sugar candy and sweets, but Your Name alone is Ambrosial Nectar. ||4||
ਦੇ ਦੇ ਨੀਵ. ਦਿਵਾਲ ਉਸਾਰੀ; ਭਸਮੰਦਰ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ॥

ਡੂੰਘੀਆਂ ਬੁਨਿਆਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ (ਪੁੱਟ ਕੇ) ਬੰਦਾ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਉਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੀਆਂ ਇਮਾਰਤਾ ਅਖੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਅੰਬਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Digging deep foundations, the walls are constructed, but in the end, the buildings return to heaps of dust.
ਸੰਚੇ ਸੰਚਿ. ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ; ਅੰਧੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਮੇਰੀ ॥

ਆਦਮੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਜਮ੍ਹਾ ਤੇ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ। ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੈ।
People gather and hoard their possessions, and give nothing to anyone else - the poor fools think that everything is theirs.
ਸੋਇਨ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੋਇਨ ਮਾੜੀ; ਸੰਪੈ. ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੫॥

ਸੁਨਹਿਰੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਤੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ (ਰਾਵਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਂ ਰਹੇ।) ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਨਹੀਂ।
Riches do not remain with anyone - not even the golden palaces of Sri Lanka. ||5||
ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੰਨ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥

ਕੰਨ ਦੇ, ਹੇ ਬੇਵਕੂਫ ਤੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਮਨ!
Listen, you foolish and ignorant mind
ਹੋਗੁ; ਤਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਕੇਵਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜਾ ਹੀ ਨੇਪਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਭਾਰਾ; ਹਮ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥

ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਵਡਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਦਨਾ ਹਟਵਾਣੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ।
My Banker is the Great Lord and Master. I am only His petty merchant.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਸਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀ; ਮਾਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ॥੬॥੧॥੧੩॥

ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਸੇ ਦੀ ਪੁੰਜੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
This soul and body all are His. He Himself kills, and brings back to life. ||6||1||13||

ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ. ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ; ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ. ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਪੰਜ ਹਲ, ਮੈਂ ਕੇਵਲ ਕਲਾ ਜੀਵ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਝੁੱਗਾ ਝਾਹਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਰਖਾਂਗਾ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿਦੜੀਏ?
There are five of them, but I am all alone. How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind?
ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ; ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥

ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਤੇ ਨਿਤਾਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੁਟਦੇ ਤੇ ਲੁੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਫਰਿਆਦ ਕਰਾਂ?
They are beating and plundering me over and over again; unto whom can I complain? ||1||
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ; ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

ਪੂਜਯ ਵਿਆਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੂ!
Chant the Name of the Supreme Lord, O my mind.
ਆਗੈ; ਜਮ ਦਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਤੇਰੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਖਤ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
Otherwise, in the world hereafter, you will have to face the awesome and cruel army of Death. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸਾਰਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੁਆਰਾ; ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਸਾ ਧਨਾ ॥
ausaar marrolee raakhai duaaraa; bheetar baitthee saa dhanaa |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਲਾਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੈ।
God has erected the temple of the body; He has placed the nine doors, and the soul-bride sits within.
ਅੰਮਿ੍ਰਤ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਮਣਿ; ਅਵਰਿ ਲੁਟੇਨਿ. ਸੁ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੨॥

ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ-ਰਹਿਤ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ, ਮੁਟਿਆਰ, ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਕਲੋਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਜਣੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਟੀ ਪੁਟੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
She enjoys the sweet play again and again, while the five demons are plundering her. ||2||
ਢਾਹਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਲੂਟਿਆ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ; ਸਾ ਧਨ ਪਕੜੀ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ॥
dtaeh marrolee loottiaa dehuraa; saa dhan pakarree ek janaa |
ਮੌਤ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਢਾਹ ਸੁਟਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਟ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਜਣੀ, ਮੁਟਿਆਰ ਫੜੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
In this way, the temple is being demolished; the body is being plundered, and the soul-bride, left all alone, is captured.
ਜਮ ਡੰਡਾ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਪੜਿਆ; ਭਾਗਿ ਗਏ. ਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੩॥
jam ddanddaa gal sangal parriaa; bhaag ge. se panch janaa |3|
ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਮੁਤਕਹਿਰਾ ਉਸ ਤੇ ਵਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗਰਦਨ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਜੰਜੀਰ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਪੰਜ ਜਣੇ ਨੱਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Death strikes her down with his rod, the shackles are placed around her neck, and now the five have left. ||3||
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਲੋੜੈ. ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ; ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੁੜੇਨਿ, ਸੁ ਖਾਧਾਤਾ ॥

ਪਤਨੀ ਸੋਨਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦੌਸਤ ਚੰਗਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਲੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ।
The wife yearns for gold and silver, and her friends, the senses, yearn for good food.
ਨਾਨਕ. ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ; ਜਾਸੀ ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪॥

ਨਾਨਕ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਤਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਰੜਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਏਗਾ।
O Nanak, she commits sins for their sake; she shall go, bound and gagged, to the City of Death. ||4||2||14||

ਉਹ ਹਨ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਨੱਤੀਆਂ, ਜਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਨੱਤੀਆਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ। ਆਪਣੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਖਫਣੀ ਬਣਾ।
Let your ear-rings be those ear-rings which pierce deep within your heart. Let your body be your patched coat.
ਪੰਚ ਚੇਲੇ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਰਾਵਲ; ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਡੰਡਾਤਾ ॥੧॥
panch chele vas keejeh raaval; ihu man keejai ddanddaataa |1|
ਆਪਣੇ ਪੰਜ ਮੁਰੀਦਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋਟਾ ਬਣਾ, ਹੇ ਯੋਗੀ!
Let the five passions be disciples under your control, O begging Yogi, and make this mind your walking stick. ||1||
ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ; ਇਵ ਪਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥
jog jugat; iv paavasitaa |
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਯੋਗ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਲ੍ਹੱਭ ਪਵੇਗਾ।
Thus you shall find the Way of Yoga.
ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ. ਦੂਜਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਸਤਿ; ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲਿ. ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ek sabad. doojaa hor naasat; kand mool. man laavasitaa |1| rahaau |
ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸਥਿਰ ਹੈ। ਹੋਰ ਸਮੂਹ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਫਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਜੜਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਖੁਰਾਕ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
There is only the One Word of the Shabad; everything else shall pass away. Let this be the fruits and roots of your mind's diet. ||1||Pause||
ਮੂੰਡਿ ਮੁੰਡਾਇਐ. ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ; ਹਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਗੰਗਾਤਾ ॥

ਜੇਕਰ ਗੰਗਾ ਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਮੁਨਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ, ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਸੁਰੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

ਤਿ੍ਰਭਵਣ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ; ਏਕੁ. ਨ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਅੰਧਾਤਾ ॥੨॥

ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਜਹਾਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਮਨਾਖਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।

ਕਰਿ ਪਟੰਬੁ. ਗਲੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿ; ਸੰਸਾ. ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥

ਤੂੰ ਪਖੰਡ ਰਚਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਮੂੰਹ-ਜਬਾਨੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇਰਾ ਵਹਿਮ ਕਦਾਚਿਤ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ।
