ਗਊੜੀ ਚੇਤੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

ਹੇ ਦੇਹਿ! ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਰ ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਰਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਇਕ ਖੇਡ ਹੈ।

With your nectar-like body, you live in comfort, but this world is just a passing drama.

ਤੂੰ ਲਾਲਚ ਤਮ੍ਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਘੜੇ ਬੋਝ ਚੁਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

You practice greed, avarice and great falsehood, and you carry such a heavy burden.

ਹੇ ਦੇਹਿ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸੁਆਹ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਖੱਜਲ-ਖੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ।

O body, I have seen you blowing away like dust on the earth. ||1||

ਮੇਰੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਵੱਲ ਕੰਨ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰ।

Listen - listen to my advice!

ਨੇਕ ਅਮਲ ਕਮਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ! ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਮੌਕਾ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੱਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਣਾ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Only the good deeds which you have done shall remain with you, O my soul. This opportunity shall not come again! ||1||Pause||

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਦੇਹਿ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਦੀ ਹਾਂ। ਮੇਰੀ ਨਸੀਹਤ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰ।

I say to you, O my body: listen to my advice!

ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਦਖੋਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੂੜੀਆਂ ਚੁਗਲੀਆਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ।

You slander, and then praise others; you indulge in lies and gossip.

ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਮਨ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਦੀ ਵੇਲ (ਤ੍ਰੀਮਤ) ਨੂੰ ਤਕਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਰਕਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

You gaze upon the wives of others, O my soul; you steal and commit evil deeds.

ਜਦ ਆਤਮਾ, ਰਾਜ ਹੰਸ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਮਗਰ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਛੱਡੀ ਹੋਈ ਤੀਵੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੇ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

But when the swan departs, you shall remain behind, like an abandoned woman. ||2||

ਹੇ ਦੇਹਿ! ਤੂੰ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਸਦੀ ਹੈ। ਤੂੰ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਭਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

O body, you are living in a dream! What good deeds have you done?

ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਤਸਕਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ ਲਿਆਂਦੀ ਤਦ ਇਹ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਾ।

When I stole something by deception, then my mind was pleased.

ਇਸ ਮਾਤ ਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੋਈ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਪਨਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਭਣੀ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬੇਫਾਇਦਾ ਵੰਞ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।

I have no honor in this world, and I shall find no shelter in the world hereafter. My life has been lost, wasted in vain! ||3||

ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਪਿਤਾ। ਨਾਨਕ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ। ਠਹਿਰਾੳ।

I am totally miserable! O Baba Nanak, no one cares for me at all! ||1||Pause||

ਤੁਰਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਕੋਤਲ ਸੋਨਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਸਤਰ ਦੇ ਢੇਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ।

Turkish horses, gold, silver and loads of gorgeous clothes

ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਏਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਪਿਛੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ।

- none of these shall go with you, O Nanak. They are lost and left behind, you fool!

ਕੂਜੇ ਦੀ ਮਿਸਰੀ ਤੇ ਸੌਗੀ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਚੱਖੇ ਹਨ। ਕੇਵਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸੁਧਾਰਸ ਜੈਸਾ ਮਿੱਠੜਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸੂਆਮੀ!।

I have tasted all the sugar candy and sweets, but Your Name alone is Ambrosial Nectar. ||4||

ਡੂੰਘੀਆਂ ਬੁਨਿਆਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ (ਪੁੱਟ ਕੇ) ਬੰਦਾ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਉਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੀਆਂ ਇਮਾਰਤਾ ਅਖੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਅੰਬਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

Digging deep foundations, the walls are constructed, but in the end, the buildings return to heaps of dust.

ਆਦਮੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਜਮ੍ਹਾ ਤੇ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ। ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੈ।

People gather and hoard their possessions, and give nothing to anyone else - the poor fools think that everything is theirs.

ਸੁਨਹਿਰੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਤੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ (ਰਾਵਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਂ ਰਹੇ।) ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਨਹੀਂ।

Riches do not remain with anyone - not even the golden palaces of Sri Lanka. ||5||

ਕੰਨ ਦੇ, ਹੇ ਬੇਵਕੂਫ ਤੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਮਨ!

Listen, you foolish and ignorant mind

ਕੇਵਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜਾ ਹੀ ਨੇਪਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

- only His Will prevails. ||1||Pause||

ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਵਡਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਦਨਾ ਹਟਵਾਣੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ।

My Banker is the Great Lord and Master. I am only His petty merchant.

ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਸੇ ਦੀ ਪੁੰਜੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

This soul and body all are His. He Himself kills, and brings back to life. ||6||1||13||
