ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣਿ; ਠਾਕ. ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
sachai sabad neesaan; tthaak. na paaeeai |
ਜੋ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਝੰਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ।
No one blocks the way of those who are blessed with the Banner of the True Word of the Shabad.
ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਵਖਾਣਿ; ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥੧੮॥

ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਵਣ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਅਤੇ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੁਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Hearing, understanding and speaking Truth, one is called to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||18||

ਪਹਿਰਾ ਅਗਨਿ. ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਧਾ; ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਅੱਗ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਪਾ ਲਵਾਂ, ਬਰਫ ਅੰਦਰ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਵਾਂ।
If I dressed myself in fire, and built my house of snow, and made iron my food;
ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵਾ; ਧਰਤੀ ਹਾਕ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਤਕਲੀਫਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਜਲ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੀ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਜਮੀਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਿੱਕ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਲਾ ਲਵਾਂ।
and if I were to drink in all pain like water, and drive the entire earth before me;
ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੀ ਅੰਬਰੁ ਤੋਲੀ; ਪਿਛੈ ਟੰਕੁ ਚੜਾਈ ॥
dhar taaraajee anbar tolee; pichhai ttank charraaee |
ਅਸਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕੜੀ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਰ ਕੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਪੱਲੜੇ ਵਿੰਚ ਰੱਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਚਾਰ ਮਾਸੇ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੋਖ ਲਵਾਂ।
and if I were to place the earth upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin;
ਏਵਡੁ ਵਧਾ. ਮਾਵਾ ਨਾਹੀ; ਸਭਸੈ ਨਥਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਐਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਕਿ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਨਾਂ ਸਮਾਂ ਸਕਾਂ, ਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਕੇਲ ਪਾ ਨੱਕ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਟੋਰੀ ਫਿਰਾਂ।
and if I were to become so great that I could not be contained, and if I were to control and lead all;
ਏਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ; ਕਰੀ ਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
etaa taan hovai man andar; karee bhi aakh karaaee |
ਜੇਕਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਐਨਾ ਬਲ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਕਰਾਵਾਂ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਬੇਫਾਇਦਾ ਹੈ।
and if I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could cause others to do my bidding-so what?
ਜੇਵਡੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ. ਤੇਵਡ ਦਾਤੀ; ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
jevadd saahib. tevadd daatee; de de kare rajaaee |
ਜਿੱਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੈ, ਓਡੀਆਂ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਖਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
As Great as our Lord and Master is, so great are His gifts. He bestows them according to His Will.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ. ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਉਪਰਿ; ਸਚਿ; ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥
naanak nadar. kare jis upar; sach; naam vaddiaaee |1|
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜਰ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1||

ਆਖਣੁ. ਆਖਿ ਨ ਰਜਿਆ; ਸੁਨਣਿ. ਨ ਰਜੇ ਕੰਨ ॥
aakhan. aakh na rajiaa; sunan. na raje kan |
ਮੂੰਹ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਧ੍ਰਾਪਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਨ ਸਰਵਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਜਦੇ।
The mouth is not satisfied by speaking, and the ears are not satisfied by hearing.
ਅਖੀ. ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਰਜੀਆ; ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਕ ਇਕ ਵੰਨ ॥
akhee. dekh na rajeea; gun gaahak ik van |
ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ। ਹਰ ਅੰਗ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਖੂਬੀ ਦਾ ਖ੍ਰੀਦਦਾਰ ਹੈ।
The eyes are not satisfied by seeing-each organ seeks out one sensory quality.
ਭੁਖਿਆ. ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ; ਗਲੀ ਭੁਖ. ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
bhukhiaa. bhukh na utarai; galee bhukh. na jaae |
ਖੁਦਿਆਵੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਖੁਦਿਆ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਮੂੰਹ-ਜਬਾਨੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੁਦਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
The hunger of the hungry is not appeased; by mere words, hunger is not relieved.
ਨਾਨਕ. ਭੁਖਾ ਤਾ ਰਜੈ; ਜਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ. ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਭੁੱਖਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਸਿਫਤਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, hunger is relieved only when one utters the Glorious Praises of the Praiseworthy Lord. ||2||

ਸਬੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Without the True One, all are false, and all practice falsehood.
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ; ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਬੰਨਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥

ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਝੂਠੇ ਨਰੜ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਧਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Without the True One, the false ones are bound and gagged and driven off.
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ. ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ; ਛਾਰੁ ਰਲਾਈਐ ॥

ਸੱਚੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਦੇਹਿ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
Without the True One, the body is just ashes, and it mingles again with ashes.
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ. ਸਭ ਭੁਖ; ਜਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥

ਸੱਚੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਤੇ ਖੁਰਾਕ ਸਮੂਹ ਭੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
Without the True Ome, all food and clothes are unsatisfying.
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ; ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।
Without the True One, the false ones do not attain the Lord's Court.
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ; ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥
koorrai laalach lag; mehal khuaaeeai |
ਝੂਠੇ ਲੋਭ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ, ਇਨਸਾਨ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂ ਦਾ ਹੈ।
Attached to false attachments, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is lost.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਓ ਠਗਿ; ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਛਲਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਛਲ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The whole world is deceived by deception, coming and going in reincarnation.
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਤਿ੍ਰਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ; ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥੧੯॥

ਸਰੀਰ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਬੁਝਦੀ ਹੈ।
Within the body is the fire of desire; through the Word of the Shabad, it is quenched. ||19||

ਨਾਨਕ, ਗੁਰੂ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਦਾ ਬਿਰਛ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪੁਸ਼ਪ ਈਮਾਨ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮੇਵਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ-ਗਿਆਨ।
O Nanak, the Guru is the tree of contentment, with flowers of faith, and fruits of spiritual wisdom.
ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿਆ. ਹਰਿਆ ਸਦਾ; ਪਕੈ. ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥
ras rasiaa. hariaa sadaa; pakai. karam dhiaan |
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਸਿੰਚਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ, ਇਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਸਰ-ਸਬਜ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨੇਕ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
Watered with the Lord's Love, it remains forever green; through the karma of good deeds and meditation, it ripens.
ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਦ ਖਾਦਾ ਲਹੈ; ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
pat ke saad khaadaa lahai; daanaa kai sir daan |1|
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਭੁੰਚਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇੱਜਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਰੋਮਣੀ ਦਾਤ ਹੈ।
Honor is obtained by eating this tasty dish; of all gifts, this is the greatest gift. ||1||

ਗੁਰੂ ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਦਰੱਖਤ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਪੱਤੇ ਮੂੰਗੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਪ ਜਵਾਹਿਰਾਤ ਤੇ ਮਾਣਕ।
The Guru is the tree of gold, with leaves of coral, and blossoms of jewels and rubies.
ਤਿਤੁ. ਫਲ ਰਤਨ ਲਗਹਿ. ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਖਿਤ; ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥

ਉਸ ਪੌਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮੁਖਾਰਬਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਕਥਨ ਦੀ ਮਣੀ ਦਾ ਮੇਵਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Words from His Mouth are fruits of jewels. Within His Heart, He beholds the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ. ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ; ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
naanak. karam hovai mukh masatak; likhiaa hovai lekh |
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਿਖਤਾਕਾਰ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, He is obtained by those, upon whose faces and foreheads such pre-recorded destiny is written.
ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ; ਪੂਜੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥

ਅਠਾਹਟ ਯਾਤਰਾ-ਅਸਥਾਨ ਪਰਮ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਲੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are contained in the constant worship of the feet of the Exalted Guru.
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਕੋਪੁ; ਚਾਰੇ ਨਦੀਆ ਅਗਿ ॥

ਨਿਰਦਈਪੁਣਾ, ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ, ਲਾਲਚ ਤੇ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਚਾਰੇ ਅਗਨੀ ਦੇ ਦਰਿਆ ਹਨ।
Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are the four rivers of fire.
ਪਵਹਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ; ਤਰੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਲਗਿ ॥੨॥

ਉਨੱਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਿੱਗ ਪੈਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੜ ਬਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਚੰਗੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Falling into them, one is burned, O Nanak! One is saved only by holding tight to good deeds. ||2||

ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਜੀ ਮੌਤ ਤੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਪਾ ਲੈ ਅਤੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਅਖੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਝੋਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
While you are alive, conquer death, and you shall have no regrets in the end.
ਝੂਠਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ; ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥
jhootthaa ihu sansaar; kin samajhaaeeai |
ਕੂੜੀ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆਈ ਹੈ।
This world is false, but only a few understand this.
ਸਚਿ. ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ; ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਈਐ ॥

ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰਾਂ ਮਗਰ ਨਸਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
People do not enshrine love for the Truth; they chase after worldly affairs instead.

ਸਤਿਆਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਚੰਦਰਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਡ ਉਤੇ ਖੜਾ ਹੈ।
The terrible time of death and annihilation hovers over the heads of the world.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ; ਮਾਰੇ ਦਾਈਐ ॥

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਤਾਬੇ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਫਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ, ਦਾਅ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਡ ਉਤੇ ਡੰਡਾ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the Messenger of Death smashes his club over their heads.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ; ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
aape dee piaar; man vasaaeeai |
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord Himself gives His Love, and enshrines it within their minds.
ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਚਸਾ ਵਿਲੰਮੁ; ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
muhat na chasaa vilam; bhareeai paaeeai |
ਜਦ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਪੜੋਪੀ ਲਬਾਲਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਕੂਚ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਲਮ੍ਹੇ ਜਾਂ ਪਲ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਦੇਰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ।
Not a moment or an instant's delay is permitted, when one's measure of life is full.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝਿ; ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੦॥

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਨਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
By Guru's Grace, one comes to know the True One, and is absorbed into Him. ||20||

Salok, First Mehl:
ਤੁਮੀ ਤੁਮਾ ਵਿਸੁ; ਅਕੁ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਨਿਮੁ ਫਲੁ ॥
tumee tumaa vis; ak dhatooraa nim fal |
ਤੂੰਬੀ ਜੰਗਲੀ ਕੱਦੂ, ਅੱਕ, ਧਤੂਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਨਿੰਮ ਦੀ ਨਮੋਲੀ ਦੀ ਕੁੜੱਤਣ,
Bitter melon, swallow-wort, thorn-apple and nim fruit
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ; ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ. ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥
man mukh vaseh tis; jis toon. chit na aavahee |
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ!
these bitter poisons lodge in the minds and mouths of those who do not remember You
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਸੁ; ਹੰਢਨਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ॥੧॥
naanak kaheeai kis; handtan karamaa baahare |1|
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਾਂ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਲੀਆਮੇਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
O Nanak, how shall I tell them this? Without the karma of good deeds, they are only destroying themselves. ||1||

ਮਤਿ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ. ਕਿਰਤੁ ਸਾਥਿ; ਕਬ ਉਤਮ ਕਬ ਨੀਚ ॥
mat pankheroo. kirat saath; kab utam kab neech |
ਭੌਰ ਪੰਛੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ (ਸਬੱਬ) ਕਦੇ ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਅਧਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The intellect is a bird; on account of its actions, it is sometimes high, and sometimes low.
