ਜਿੰਨੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਭੁਖ ਹੋਰਸੁ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਦਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਉਨੀ ਹੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਭੁਖ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਬੰਦਾ ਮੁੜ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The more one feels hunger for other tastes and pleasures, the more this hunger persists.
ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਿ੍ਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ; ਸੋ ਵੇਚੇ ਸਿਰੁ. ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ॥

ਜੀਹਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਖੁਦ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੀਸ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Those unto whom the Lord Himself shows mercy, sell their head to the Guru.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ. ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਤਿ੍ਰਪਤਿਆ; ਫਿਰਿ. ਭੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੦॥੪੮॥

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਲ ਨਫਰ ਨਾਨਕ, ਰੱਜ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗੇਗੀ।
Servant Nanak is satisfied by the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. He shall never feel hungry again. ||4||4||10||48||

ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ. ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਨਿਤ; ਕਿਉ ਦੇਖਾ. ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥

ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਾਹ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਵੇਖਾਂ?
Within my conscious mind is the constant longing for the Lord. How can I behold the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, Lord?
ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਸੋ ਜਾਣਤਾ; ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ. ਹਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਦਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਖਰਾ ਹੀ ਲਾਡਲਾ ਹੈ।
One who loves the Lord knows this; the Lord is very dear to my conscious mind.
ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ; ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲਿਆ. ਮੇਰਾ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਨੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲੋ ਮੈਂ ਵਿਛੁਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਾਂ।
I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has re-united me with my Creator Lord; I was separated from Him for such a long time! ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ. ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ; ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥

ਮੈਂ ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰ ਹਾਂ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਡਿੱਗਾ ਹਾਂ, ਹੈ ਭਗਵਾਨ!
O my Lord, I am a sinner; I have come to Your Sanctuary, and fallen at Your Door, Lord.
ਮਤੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ. ਹਮ ਮੇਲੈ ਕਬਹੂੰ; ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਮੇਰੀ ਅਕਲ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਗੁਣ-ਵਿਹੁਣ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਮਲੀਨ ਹਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
My intellect is worthless; I am filthy and polluted. Please shower me with Your Mercy sometime. ||1||Pause||
ਹਮਰੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹੈ; ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ, ਹਰਿ. ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

ਬੜੇ ਹੀ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਹਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੁਕਰਮ। ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਏ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, ਹੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ!
My demerits are so many and numerous. I have sinned so many times, over and over again. O Lord, they cannot be counted.
ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ; ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹਿ. ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

ਤੂੰ ਹੈ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਨੇਕੀ-ਨਿਪੁੰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ! ਜਦ ਤੇਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਫੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
You, Lord, are the Merciful Treasure of Virtue. When it pleases You, Lord, You forgive me.
ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ. ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤੀ; ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਦੀਓ. ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

ਮੈਂ ਮੁਜਰਮ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ-ਮਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਕਰਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
I am a sinner, saved only by the Company of the Guru. He has bestowed the Teachings of the Lord's Name, which saves me. ||2||
ਤੁਮਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਾ. ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ; ਜਬ ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਲਹ. ਤਬ ਬਿਸਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਮੈਂ ਵਰਨਣ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ! ਜਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਤਦ ਅਸਚਰਜਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
What Glorious Virtues of Yours can I describe, O my True Guru? When the Guru speaks, I am transfixed with wonder.
ਹਮ ਜੈਸੇ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ. ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਖੈ; ਜੈਸੇ ਹਮ. ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥

ਕੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਪਾਪੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਬੰਦ-ਖਲਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
Can anyone else save a sinner like me? The True Guru has protected and saved me.
ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਤਾ. ਤੂੰਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਤਾ; ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੁ ਬੰਧਪੁ. ਮੇਰਾ ਸਖਾ ਸਖਾਇ ॥੩॥

O Guru, You are my father. O Guru, You are my mother. O Guru, You are my relative, companion and friend. ||3||
ਜੋ ਹਮਰੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਹੋਤੀ. ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ; ਸਾ ਬਿਧਿ. ਤੁਮ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਆਪੇ ॥

ਜਿਹੜੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੀ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ! ਉਸ ਹਾਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਸੀਂ, ਹੇ ਰਬ-ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੋ!
My condition, O my True Guru - that condition, O Lord, is known only to You.
ਹਮ ਰੁਲਤੇ ਫਿਰਤੇ. ਕੋਈ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੂਛਤਾ; ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਿ. ਕੀਰੇ ਹਮ ਥਾਪੇ ॥

ਮੈਂ ਮਿਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਠੇਡੇ ਖਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਰਦਾ। ਵਡੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਕੀੜਾ ਉਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਉਤੇ ਅਸਥਾਪਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।
I was rolling around in the dirt, and no one cared for me at all. In the Company of the Guru, the True Guru, I, the worm, have been raised up and exalted.

Blessed, blessed is the Guru of servant Nanak; meeting Him, all my sorrows and troubles have come to an end. ||4||5||11||49||

ਸੋਨੇ ਤੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਦਮੀ ਫਰੇਫ਼ਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ।
The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.
ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਘੋੜੇ ਖੁਸੀ; ਮਨੁ ਅਨ ਰਸਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਮਕਾਨਾ, ਮਹਿਲਾ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਸੁਆਦਾ ਦੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
The mind has become attached to the pleasures of houses, palaces, horses and other enjoyments.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ. ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ; ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਪਾਵਾਂਗਾ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ!
The Lord God does not even enter his thoughts; how can he be saved, O my Lord King? ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ; ਇਹ ਨੀਚ ਕਰਮ. ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

O my Lord, these are my lowly actions, O my Lord.
ਗੁਣਵੰਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ; ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ. ਬਖਸਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਸਭਿ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਨੇਕੀ-ਨਿਪੁੰਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ! ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਮਾਫ ਕਰ ਦੇ ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
O Lord, Har, Har, Treasure of Virtue, Merciful Lord: please bless me with Your Grace and forgive me for all my mistakes. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿਛੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨਹੀ, ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ; ਕਿਛੁ ਢੰਗੁ. ਨ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
kichh roop nahee, kichh jaat naahee; kichh dtang. na meraa |
ਮੇਰੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਹੱਪਣ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਾਂ ਉਚੀ ਜਾਤੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਦਰੁਸਤ ਰਹੁ-ਰੀਤੀ।
I have no beauty, no social status, no manners.
ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਲੈ. ਬੋਲਹ, ਗੁਣ ਬਿਹੂਨ; ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਨ. ਤੇਰਾ ॥
kiaa muhu lai. bolah, gun bihoon; naam japiaa na. teraa |
ਮੈਂ ਖੂਬੀ-ਰਹਿਤ ਕਿਸ ਮੁਖ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਜੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲਣ ਦਾ ਹੀਆ ਕਰਾਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ।
With what face am I to speak? I have no virtue at all; I have not chanted Your Name.
ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ. ਸੰਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਉਬਰੇ; ਪੁੰਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇਰਾ ॥੨॥

I am a sinner, saved only by the Company of the Guru. This is the generous blessing of the True Guru. ||2||
ਸਭੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ. ਮੁਖੁ ਨਕੁ ਦੀਆ; ਵਰਤਣ ਕਉ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਾਵਾਂ, ਦੇਹਾਂ ਮੂੰਹ, ਨੱਕ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਤਿਮਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਲ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ।
He gave all beings souls, bodies, mouths, noses and water to drink.
ਅੰਨੁ ਖਾਣਾ. ਕਪੜੁ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਦੀਆ; ਰਸ ਅਨਿ ਭੋਗਾਣੀ ॥

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਣ ਲਈ ਅਨਾਜ, ਪਹਿਨਣ ਲਈ ਕਪੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਮਾਨਣ ਲਈ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
He gave them corn to eat, clothes to wear, and other pleasures to enjoy.
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ. ਸੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ; ਪਸੂ. ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
jin dee. su chit na aavee; pasoo. hau kar jaanee |3|
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਕੁਛ) ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ। ਡੰਗਰ (ਭਾਵ ਮੂਰਖ) ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
But they do not remember the One who gave them all this. The animals think that they made themselves! ||3||
ਸਭੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ; ਤੂੰ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
sabh keetaa teraa varatadaa; toon antarajaamee |
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਜੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ। ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ, ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।
You made them all; You are all-pervading. You are the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਹਮ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ. ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹ; ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
ham jant vichaare. kiaa karah; sabh khel tum suaamee |
ਅਸੀਂ ਗਰੀਬੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ? ਸਮੂਹ ਖੇਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ!
What can these wretched creatures do? This whole drama is Yours, O Lord and Master.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ. ਹਾਟਿ ਵਿਹਾਝਿਆ; ਹਰਿ ਗੁਲਮ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੨॥੫੦॥

ਮੰਡੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮੁੱਲ ਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਸਕੀਨ ਨਾਨਕ! ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗੋਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਹੈ।
Servant Nanak was purchased in the slave-market. He is the slave of the Lord's slaves. ||4||6||12||50||
