Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਮਾਝ, ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਮਨਮਤੀਆਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ, ਵਾਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪੰਡਤ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The self-willed manmukhs read and recite; they are called Pandits-spiritual scholars.

ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਘਣਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

But they are in love with duality, and they suffer in terrible pain.

ਮੰਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

Intoxicated with vice, they understand nothing at all. They are reincarnated, over and over again. ||1||

ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਸ ਕੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who subdue their ego, and unite with the Lord.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਆ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸੁਤੇ-ਸਿਧ ਹੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਅੰi੍ਰਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

They serve the Guru, and the Lord dwells within their minds; they intuitively drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਪੰਡਤ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਆਬਿ-ਹਿਯਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।

The Pandits read the Vedas, but they do not obtain the Lord's essence.

ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇ ਬੁੱਧੀ-ਹੀਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਬਹਿਸ ਮੁਬਾਹਿਸੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Intoxicated with Maya, they argue and debate.

ਅਗਿਆਤ ਬੁਧੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

The foolish intellectuals are forever in spiritual darkness. The Gurmukhs understand, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਬਿਆਨ ਹੋ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬਿਆਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Indescribable is described only through the beauteous Word of the Shabad.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖ-ਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

Through the Guru's Teachings, the Truth becomes pleasing to the mind.

ਜੋ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਰੈਣ ਸੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਮ ਸੱਚੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

Those who speak of the truest of the true, day and night-their minds are imbued with the Truth. ||3||

ਜਿਹੜੇ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਸੱਚ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those who are attuned to Truth, love the Truth.

ਸਾਈਂ ਖੁਦ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਫਸੋਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।

The Lord Himself bestows this gift; He shall not take it back.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the True Lord is known forever; meeting the True One, peace is found. ||4||

ਝੂਠ ਅਤੇ ਫਰੇਬ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਨਤਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਿਮੜਦੀ,

The filth of fraud and falsehood does not stick to those who,

ਜੋ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਰੈਣ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਖਬਰਦਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

By Guru's Grace, remain awake and aware, night and day.

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

The Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within their hearts; their light merges into the Light. ||5||

ਬੰਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਲੱਛਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਜੌਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ।

They read about the three qualities, but they do not know the essential reality of the Lord.

ਉਹ ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿੰਞਾਣਦੇ।

They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਫਾਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6||

ਵੇਦ ਕੂਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੋਹਨੀ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।

The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities.

ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਦਾ ਬਹਕਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਧਰਮੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

The self-willed manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand.

ਲੋਕੀਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਸੁਭਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਵਾਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਉਹ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਉਠਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7||

ਜਦ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਜਰੀਏ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਹਿਮ ਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੱਚੀ ਹੈ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲਤਾ। ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, True is the Greatness of the Name. Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31||

Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਪਤ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੈ।

The Lord Himself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; He is Manifest and Related as well.

ਜੋ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਪੰਡਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pandits, the spiritual scholars.

ਜੋ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਮੂਹ ਵੰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well, when they enshrine the Lord's Name in the mind. ||1||

ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who taste the essence of the Lord, and savor its taste.

ਜੋ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੁਧਾ ਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਛਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਪਾਕ-ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Those who taste this essence of the Lord are the pure, immaculate beings. They meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਚੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those who reflect upon the Shabad are beyond karma.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਯਥਾਰਥ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ-ਬੋਧ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਟ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

They subdue their ego, and find the essence of wisdom, deep within their being.

ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇ ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਲੱਛਣਾ ਤੋਂ ਉਚੇਰਾ ਉਠ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਹਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

They obtain the nine treasures of the wealth of the Naam. Rising above the three qualities, they merge into the Lord. ||2||

ਜੋ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਆਜਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਸ ਸੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ।

It is only by Guru's Grace that one is rid of ego.

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਮਾਨਸਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ-ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those who have discriminating minds, continually examine their own selves. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they sing the Lord's Glorious Praises. ||3||

ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ,

The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean.

ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਸਾਧੂ, ਹੰਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਥੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੋਤੀ ਚੁਗਦੇ ਹਨ।

The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean.

ਦਿਹੁੰ ਰੈਣ ਉਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਜਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਧੋ ਸੁਟਦੇ ਹਨ।

They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4||

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਰਾਜ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਲ,

The pure swans, with love and affection,

ਆਪਣੀ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਟ ਕੇ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਦੇ ਹਨ।

Dwell in the Ocean of the Lord, and subdue their ego.
