Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਮਾਇਆ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਦੇ ਅਡੰਬਰਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਫੈਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

It torments us with the expression of pleasure and pain.

ਇਹ ਬਹਿਸ਼ਤ, ਦੋਜਖ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

It torments us through incarnations in heaven and hell.

ਇਹ ਅਮੀਰਾ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਦੇਖੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

It is seen to afflict the rich, the poor and the glorious.

ਇਹ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ, ਲਾਲਚ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

The source of this illness which torments us is greed. ||1||

ਮੋਹਨੀ ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Maya torments us in so many ways.

ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਤਾਬੇ ਹੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ! ਸਾਧੂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਤੀਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

But the Saints live under Your Protection, God. ||1||Pause||

ਇਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਹਕਾਰੀ ਅਕਲ ਨਾਲ ਨਸ਼ਈ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

It torments us through intoxication with intellectual pride.

ਇਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਪਤਨੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

It torments us through the love of children and spouse.

ਇਹ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹਾਥੀਆਂ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਸਤਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਗਲਤਾਨ ਹੈ।

It torments us through elephants, horses and beautiful clothes.

ਇਹ ਉਸ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਨਾਲ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

It torments us through the intoxication of wine and the beauty of youth. ||2||

ਇਹ ਜਮੀਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਕੰਗਾਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਜ ਬਹਾਰਾ ਮਾਨਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

It torments landlords, paupers and lovers of pleasure.

ਇਹ ਸਭਾਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਾਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਗ ਦੇ ਸੁਨਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

It torments us through the sweet sounds of music and parties.

ਇਹ ਪਲੰਘਾ, ਮੰਦਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ-ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਮੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

It torments us through beautiful beds, palaces and decorations.

ਇਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੰਜ ਮੰਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਮੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

It torments us through the darkness of the five evil passions. ||3||

ਇਹ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

It torments those who act, entangled in ego.

ਘਰਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਉਤੇ ਢਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤਿਆਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੀ ਢਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

It torments us through household affairs, and it torments us in renunciation.

ਸਾਡੇ ਚਾਲ-ਚਲਣ, ਕਾਰ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਉਤੇ ਛਾਪਾ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

It torments us through character, lifestyle and social status.

ਸਿਵਾਏ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੋ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਹਰ ਸ਼ੈ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜਦੀ ਹੈ।

It torments us through everything, except for those who are imbued with the Love of the Lord. ||4||

ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀਆਂ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਕੱਟ ਸੁੱਟੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

The Sovereign Lord King has cut away the bonds of His Saints.

ਮਾਇਆ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚਿਮੜ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?

How can Maya torment them?

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ,

Says Nanak, Maya does not draw near those

ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦੀ।

Who have obtained the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||5||19||88||

ਗਊੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:

ਪਰਾਏ ਰੂਪ ਵੱਲ ਮੰਦੀ ਨਿਗ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਸੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਪਈਆਂ ਹਨ।

The eyes are asleep in corruption, gazing upon the beauty of another.

ਕਲੰਕ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਾਮ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਕੰਨ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ।

The ears are asleep, listening to slanderous stories.

ਮਿੱਠੀਆ ਸ਼ੈਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਦੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਅੰਦਰ ਜੀਭ ਸੁੱਤੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ।

The tongue is asleep, in its desire for sweet flavors.

ਧੰਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਨੂਆਂ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।

The mind is asleep, fascinated by Maya. ||1||

ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those who remain awake in this house are very rare;

ਆਪਣਾ ਵਖਰ ਉਹ ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤ ਪਾ ਲੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

by doing so, they receive the whole thing. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਖੀਆਂ (ਇੰਦਰੀਆਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮੁਆਦ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਤਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

All of my companions are intoxicated with their sensory pleasures;

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਰਖਵਾਲੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਜਾਣਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।

they do not know how to guard their own home.

ਪੰਜੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਖੋਹਣ-ਖਿੰਜਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਰਮਤੇ ਦੇ ਲੁਟੇਰੇ ਹਨ।

The five thieves have plundered them;

ਠਗ ਬੇਪਹਿਰੇ ਕਸਬੇ ਤੇ ਆ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

the thugs descend upon the unguarded village. ||2||

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਪਿਉ ਤੇ ਮਾਂ ਬਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ।

Our mothers and fathers cannot save us from them;

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਰਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ।

friends and brothers cannot protect us from them

ਦੌਲਤ ਤੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੁਕਦੇ।

they cannot be restrained by wealth or cleverness.

ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਲੁੰਚੜ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Only through the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, can those villains be brought under control. ||3||

ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਤਰਸ ਕਰੋ ਹੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਥੰਮਣਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ!

Have Mercy upon me, O Lord, Sustainer of the world.

ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੀ ਸਮੂਹ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਹੈ।

The dust of the feet of the Saints is all the treasure I need.

ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਸ ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

In the Company of the True Guru, one's investment remains intact.

ਸ਼ਰੋਮਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak is awake to the Love of the Supreme Lord. ||4||

ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਹੈ।

He alone is awake, unto whom God shows His Mercy.

ਇਹ ਖੈਰ, ਪਦਾਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਫਿਰ ਐਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।

This investment, wealth and property shall remain intact. ||1||Second Pause||20||89||

ਗਊੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ, ਸਰਦਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ।

Kings and emperors are under His Power.

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅਖਤਿਆਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ।

The whole world is under His Power.

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

Everything is done by His doing;

ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ।

other than Him, there is nothing at all. ||1||

ਆਪਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਆਖ।

Offer your prayers to your True Guru;

ਤੇਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਉਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਨੇਪਰੇ ਚਾੜ੍ਹ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

He will resolve your affairs. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉਚੇਰੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਚਹਿਰੀ,

The Darbaar of His Court is the most exalted of all.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਸੰਤਾ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।

His Name is the Support of all His devotees.

ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਰਮ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

The Perfect Master is pervading everywhere.

ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਨ ਸ਼ੌਕਤ ਹਰ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੈ।

His Glory is manifest in each and every heart. ||2||

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਗ਼ਮ ਦਾ ਠਿਕਾਣਾ ਮਸਮਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Remembering Him in meditation, the home of sorrow is abolished.

ਜੀਹਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ।

Remembering Him in meditation, the Messenger of Death shall not touch you.

ਜੀਹਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜੋ ਸੁੱਕਾ-ਸੜਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਰ-ਸਬਜ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Remembering Him in meditation, the dry branches become green again.
