Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਜੀਵ ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਦੇਹਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੈ।

The mortal claims this body as his own.

ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਚਿਮੜਦਾ ਹੈ।

Again and again, he clings to it.

ਬੱਚੇ, ਵਹੁਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

He is entangled with his children, his wife and household affairs.

ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।

He cannot be the slave of the Lord. ||1||

ਉਹ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਤ੍ਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ?

What is that way, by which the Lord's Praises might be sung?

ਉਹ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਅਕਲ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਵੇ ਹੇ ਮਾਤਾ? ਠਹਿਰਾਓ।

What is that intellect, by which this person might swim across, O mother? ||1||Pause||

ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਿਹਤਰੀ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਮਾੜਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।

That which is for his own good, he thinks is evil.

ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਆਖੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਮਾਨੰਦ ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

If someone tells him the truth, he looks upon that as poison.

ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਕਿ ਫਤਹਿ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਸਤ ਕੀ ਹੈ?

He cannot tell victory from defeat.

ਇਹ ਹੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਵਰਤ-ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਮਲੇਛ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਜਹਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ।

This is the way of life in the world of the faithless cynic. ||2||

ਜਿਹੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ-ਨਾਸਕ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ, ਪਾਗਲ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The demented fool drinks in the deadly poison,

ਸੁਧਾਰਸ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਕਊੜਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

while he believes the Ambrosial Naam to be bitter.

ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ।

He does not even approach the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;

ਚੁਰਾਸੀ ਲੱਖ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

he wanders lost through 8.4 million incarnations. ||3||

ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਇਕੋ ਹੀ ਫੰਧੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਛੀ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।

The birds are caught in the net of Maya;

ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਿੱਜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਉਥੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਰੰਗ ਰਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।

immersed in the pleasures of love, they frolic in so many ways.

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,

Says Nanak, the Perfect Guru has cut away the noose from those,

ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕਟ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।

Unto whom the Lord has shown His Mercy. ||4||13||82||

ਗਊੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:

ਤੇਰੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਹੇ ਸਾਂਈ, ਰਾਹ ਲਭਦਾ ਹੈ।

By Your Grace, we find the Way.

ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

By God's Grace, we meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਬੇੜੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਪਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

By God's Grace, we are released from our bondage.

ਤੇਰੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

By Your Grace, egotism is eradicated. ||1||

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲਾਵੇ, ਕੇਵਲ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਲਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

As You assign me, so I take to Your service.

ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਮੈਂ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਵਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

By myself, I cannot do anything at all, O Divine Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗੇ ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

If it pleases You, then I sing the Word of Your Bani.

੍ਰਜੇਕਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗੇ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਸੱਚ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

If it pleases You, then I speak the Truth.

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗੇ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਹੈ।

If it pleases You, then the True Guru showers His Mercy upon me.

ਸਾਰੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ।

All peace comes by Your Kindness, God. ||2||

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਅਮਲ ਹੈ।

Whatever pleases You is a pure action of karma.

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਮਜ਼ਹਬ ਹੈ।

Whatever pleases You is the true faith of Dharma.

ਸਮੂਹ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਂ ਦਾ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੈ।

The treasure of all excellence is with You.

ਤੂੰ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਗੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਲਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Your servant prays to You, O Lord and Master. ||3||

ਆਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

The mind and body become immaculate through the Lord's Love.

ਸਾਰੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

All peace is found in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੀ ਰਹੇ।

My mind remains attuned to Your Name;

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮ-ਅਨੰਦ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak affirms this as his greatest pleasure. ||4||14||83||

ਗਊੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:

ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਤੂੰ ਭੰਚਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿਹਭਾ,

You may taste the other flavors,

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਰੇਹ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਭਰ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਨਹੀਂ।

but your thirst shall not depart, even for an instant.

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਮਿਠਾਸ ਚਖ ਲਵੇਂ,

But when you taste the sweet flavor the the Lord's sublime essence

ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਚਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਂਗਾ।

- upon tasting it, you shall be wonder-struck and amazed. ||1||

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਡਲੀ ਜੀਭੇ! ਤੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਧਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ।

O dear beloved tongue, drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.

ਏਸ ਜਾਇਕੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰੰਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਤੂੰ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Imbued with this sublime essence, you shall be satisfied. ||1||Pause||

ਹੇ ਜੀਭੈ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰ।

O tongue, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਮੁਹਤ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰ।

Each and every moment, meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, Har.

ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਨ ਸੁਣ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਧਰੇ ਨ ਜਾ।

Do not listen to any other, and do not go anywhere else.

ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਪਰਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਸੀਬਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।

By great good fortune, you shall find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||2||

ਹੇ ਜੀਭੇ! ਅਠੇ ਪਹਿਰ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰ,

Twenty-four hours a day, O tongue, dwell upon God,

ਸ਼ਰੋਮਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ।

The Unfathomable, Supreme Lord and Master.

ਏਥੇ ਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਤੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੀ ਖੁਸ਼ ਰਹੇਗੀ।

Here and hereafter, you shall be happy forever.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਅਲਾਪਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਅਣਮੁੱਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ, ਹੇ ਜੀਭੈ।

Chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, O tongue, you shall become priceless. ||3||

ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਨਬਾਤਾਤ ਹਰੀ ਭਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੌਦੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਪ ਤੇ ਮੇਵੇ ਲੈ ਆਉਣਗੇ, ਜੇ,

All the vegetation will blossom forth for you, flowering in fruition;

ਇਸ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੰਗੀਜੀ ਹੋਈ ਤੂੰ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਛਡੇਗੀ।

imbued with this sublime essence, you shall never leave it again.

ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਮਿਠੇ ਤੇ ਸਲੂਣੇ ਜਾਇਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਤੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ।

No other sweet and tasty flavors can compare to it.

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

Says Nanak, the Guru has become my Support. ||4||15||84||

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ।

ਹਿਰਦਾ ਇਕ ਮਹਿਲ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਦੀ ਇਸਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਵਾੜ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

The mind is the temple, and the body is the fence built around it.
