ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਬਿ-ਹਿਯਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ।
Taste the ambrosial essence, the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਅਵਰਿ ਜਤਨ; ਕਹਹੁ ਕਉਨ ਕਾਜ ॥
avar jatan; kahahu kaun kaaj |
ਦਸ! ਹੋਰ ਹੀਲੇ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਹਨ?
Of what use are other efforts?
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ; ਰਾਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਲਾਜ ॥੨॥

ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਪੱਤ-ਆਬਰੂ ਬਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Showing His Mercy, the Lord Himself protects our honor. ||2||
ਕਿਆ ਮਾਨੁਖ; ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਜੋਰੁ ॥
kiaa maanukh; kahahu kiaa jor |
ਆਦਮੀ ਕੀ ਹੈ? ਦੱਸੋ ਖਾ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਸਤਿਆ ਹੈ?
What is the human? What power does he have?
ਝੂਠਾ; ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਸੋਰੁ ॥
jhootthaa; maaeaa kaa sabh sor |
ਕੂੜਾ ਹੈ ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਸ਼ੋਰ ਸ਼ਰਾਬਾ।
All the tumult of Maya is false.
ਕਰਣ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ; ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
karan karaavanahaar; suaamee |
ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
Our Lord and Master is the One who acts, and causes others to act.
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੩॥
sagal ghattaa ke antarajaamee |3|
ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।
He is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of all hearts. ||3||
ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਹੁ ॥
sarab sukhaa sukh saachaa ehu |
ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਆਰਾਮਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਹ ਯਥਾਰਥ ਆਰਾਮ ਹੈ।
Of all comforts, this is the true comfort.
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ; ਮਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
gur upades; manai meh lehu |
੍ਰਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾ।
Keep the Guru's Teachings in your mind.
ਜਾ ਕਉ; ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
jaa kau; raam naam liv laagee |
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ,
Those who bear love for the Name of the Lord
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ; ਸੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੭॥੭੬॥
kahu naanak; so dhan vaddabhaagee |4|7|76|
ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ: ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ, ਉਹ ਭਾਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਸੀਬਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।

ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ; ਉਤਾਰੀ ਮੈਲੁ ॥
sun har kathaa; utaaree mail |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਵਾਰਤਾ ਸਰਵਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਲਾਹ ਸੁੱਟੀ ਹੈ।
Listening to the Lord's sermon, my pollution has been washed away.
ਮਹਾ ਪੁਨੀਤ; ਭਏ ਸੁਖ ਸੈਲੁ ॥
mahaa puneet; bhe sukh sail |
ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੈਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
I have become totally pure, and I now walk in peace.
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ; ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ॥
vaddai bhaag; paaeaa saadhasang |
ਪਰਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ,
By great good fortune, I found the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਿਉ; ਲਾਗੋ ਰੰਗੁ ॥੧॥
paarabraham siau; laago rang |1|
ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਮਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਈ ਹੈ।
I have fallen in love with the Supreme Lord God. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ; ਜਨੁ ਤਾਰਿਓ ॥
har har naam japat; jan taario |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ, ਨੌਕਰ, ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, His servant has been carried across.
ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ; ਗੁਰਿ. ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
The Guru has lifted me up and carried me across the ocean of fire. ||1||Pause||
ਕਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ; ਮਨ ਸੀਤਲ ਭਏ ॥
kar keeratan; man seetal bhe |
ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਠੰਢਾ ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,
Singing the Kirtan of His Praises, my mind has become peaceful;
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ; ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਗਏ ॥
janam janam ke; kilavikh ge |
ਅਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਪਾਪ ਧੋਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
the sins of countless incarnations have been washed away.
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ; ਪੇਖੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
sarab nidhaan; pekhe man maeh |
ਸਾਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੇ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ ਹਨ।
I have seen all the treasures within my own mind;
ਅਬ ਢੂਢਨ; ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
ab dtoodtan; kaahe kau jaeh |2|
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਉਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਾਵਾਂ?
why should I now go out searching for them? ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪੁਨੇ; ਜਬ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
prabh apune; jab bhe deaal |
ਜਦ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ,
When God Himself becomes merciful,
ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ; ਸੇਵਕ ਘਾਲ ॥
pooran hoee; sevak ghaal |
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
the work of His servant becomes perfect.
ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਿ; ਕੀਏ ਅਪਨੇ ਦਾਸ ॥
bandhan kaatt; kee apane daas |
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਬੇੜੀਆਂ ਕਟ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
He has cut away my bonds, and made me His slave.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ; ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸ ॥੩॥
simar simar; simar gunataas |3|
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਣਾ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜਾਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ, ਆਰਾਧਨ ਤੇ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
Remember, remember, remember Him in meditation; He is the treasure of excellence. ||3||
ਏਕੋ ਮਨਿ; ਏਕੋ ਸਭ ਠਾਇ ॥
eko man; eko sabh tthaae |
ਕੇਵਲ ਓਹੀ ਅੰਤਹਕਰਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਓਹੀ ਸਾਰਿਆ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ।
He alone is in the mind; He alone is everywhere.
ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ; ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥
pooran poor rahio; sabh jaae |
ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਮਾਲਕ ਸਮੂਹ ਟਿਕਾਣਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਭਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
The Perfect Lord is totally permeating and pervading everywhere.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ; ਸਭੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai; sabh bharam chukaaeaa |
ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੇ ਹਨ।
The Perfect Guru has dispelled all doubts.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ; ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੮॥੭੭॥
har simarat; naanak sukh paaeaa |4|8|77|
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ ਠੰਢ-ਚੈਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
Remembering the Lord in meditation, Nanak has found peace. ||4||8||77||

ਅਗਲੇ ਮੁਏ; ਸਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਰੇ ॥
agale mue; si paachhai pare |
ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਰ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਭੁਲ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
Those who have died have been forgotten.
ਜੋ ਉਬਰੇ; ਸੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਲਕੁ ਖਰੇ ॥
jo ubare; se bandh lak khare |
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਬਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਕਮਰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਖਲੋਤੇ ਹਨ।
Those who survive have fastened their belts.
ਜਿਹ ਧੰਧੇ ਮਹਿ; ਓਇ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥
jih dhandhe meh; oe lapattaae |
ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਹਾਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁਝਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਖਚਤ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ।
They are busily occupied in their affairs;
ਉਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਗੁਣ; ਦਿੜੀ ਉਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੧॥
aun te dugun; dirree un maae |1|
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਗਣੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਚਿਮੜਦੇ ਹਨ।
they cling twice as hard to Maya. ||1||
ਓਹ ਬੇਲਾ; ਕਛੁ. ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
oeh belaa; kachh. cheet na aavai |
ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਉਸ ਵਕਤ ਨੂੰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
No one thinks of the time of death;
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ; ਤਾਹੂ ਲਪਟਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
binas jaae; taahoo lapattaavai |1| rahaau |
ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
people grasp to hold that which shall pass away. ||1||Pause||
ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੀ; ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇਹ ॥
aasaa bandhee; moorakh deh |
ਬੇਵਕੂਫ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ਾ ਨੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
The fools - their bodies are bound down by desires.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ; ਲਪਟਿਓ ਅਸਨੇਹ ॥
kaam krodh; lapattio asaneh |
ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ, ਗੁੱਸੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਫਾਥਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
They are mired in sexual desire, anger and attachment;
ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ; ਠਾਢੋ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥
sir aoopar; tthaadto dharam raae |
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਜਾ ਖਲੋਤਾ ਹੈ।
the Righteous Judge of Dharma stands over their heads.
ਮੀਠੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ; ਬਿਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
meetthee kar kar; bikhiaa khaae |2|
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Believing it to be sweet, the fools eat poison. ||2||
ਹਉ ਬੰਧਉ; ਹਉ ਸਾਧਉ ਬੈਰੁ ॥
hau bandhau; hau saadhau bair |
ਮੂਰਖ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ "ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੈਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਵਾਂਗਾ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿੱਸਲ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ।
They say, "I shall tie up my enemy, and I shall cut him down.
ਹਮਰੀ ਭੂਮਿ; ਕਉਣੁ ਘਾਲੈ ਪੈਰੁ ॥
hamaree bhoom; kaun ghaalai pair |
ਮੇਰੀ ਜਮੀਨ ਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਪੈਰ ਧਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?"
Who dares to set foot upon my land?
ਹਉ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ; ਹਉ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
hau panddit; hau chatur siaanaa |
ਮੈਂ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰ ਤੇ ਅਕਲਮੰਦ ਹਾਂ।
I am learned, I am clever and wise."
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ; ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
karanaihaar; na bujhai bigaanaa |3|
ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
The ignorant ones do not recognize their Creator. ||3||
ਅਪੁਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ; ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
apunee gat mit; aape jaanai |
ਆਪਣੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਕੀਮਤ ਹਰੀ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord Himself knows His Own state and condition.
ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ; ਕਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਨੈ ॥
kiaa ko kahai; kiaa aakh vakhaanai |
ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਕੀ ਆਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਥਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
What can anyone say? How can anyone describe Him?
ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ; ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਨਾ ॥
jit jit laaveh; tith tit laganaa |
ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਜੁੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Whatever He attaches us to - to that we are attached.
ਅਪਨਾ ਭਲਾ; ਸਭ ਕਾਹੂ ਮੰਗਨਾ ॥੪॥
apanaa bhalaa; sabh kaahoo manganaa |4|
ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਹਤਰੀ ਲਈ ਯਾਚਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Everyone begs for their own good. ||4||
ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ; ਤੂੰ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ॥
sabh kichh teraa; toon karanaihaar |
ਹਰ ਸ਼ੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।
Everything is Yours; You are the Creator Lord.
ਅੰਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ. ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
ant naahee kichh. paaraavaar |
ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਓੜਕ ਇਹ ਜਾ ਉਹ ਹੱਦਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
You have no end or limitation.
ਦਾਸ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਉ; ਦੀਜੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
daas apane kau; deejai daan |
ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਮਾਸ਼ਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਖੈਰ ਪਾ,
Please give this gift to Your servant,
ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ; ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੫॥੯॥੭੮॥
kabahoo na visarai; naanak naam |5|9|78|
ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਾਂ ਭੁੱਲੇ।
that Nanak might never forget the Naam. ||5||9||78||

By all sorts of efforts, people do not find salvation.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ; ਆਗਲ ਭਾਰਾ ॥

ਜਿਨ੍ਹੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਓਨਾ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੋਝ ਹੈ।
Through clever tricks, the weight is only piled on more and more.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ; ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੇਤ ॥

ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ,
Serving the Lord with a pure heart,
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਦਰਗਹ; ਸੋਭਾ ਸੇਤ ॥੧॥
prabh kee daragah; sobhaa set |1|
ਜੀਵ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਬਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
you shall be received with honor at God's Court. ||1||
