ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik oankaar sat naam karataa purakh nirbhau niravair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhan gur prasaad |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹੈ, ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ, ਰਚਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਰ ਉਸਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ। ਉਹ ਬੇ-ਖੋਫ, ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨੀ ਰਹਿਤ, ਅਜਨਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ਵਾਨ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਸਦਕਾ ਉਹ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਭਉ ਮੁਚੁ ਭਾਰਾ; ਵਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
bhau much bhaaraa; vaddaa tol |
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਡਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਜਨਦਾਰ ਹੈ।
The Fear of God is overpowering, and so very heavy,
ਮਨ ਮਤਿ ਹਉਲੀ; ਬੋਲੇ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
man mat haulee; bole bol |
ਤੁਛ ਹੈ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਤੇ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
while the intellect is lightweight, as is the speech one speaks.
ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਚਲੀਐ; ਸਹੀਐ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
sir dhar chaleeai; saheeai bhaar |
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੀਸ ਤੇ ਰਖ ਕੇ ਟੁਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਬੋਝ ਸਹਾਰ।
So place the Fear of God upon your head, and bear that weight;
ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ, ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
nadaree karamee, gur beechaar |1|
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
by the Grace of the Merciful Lord, contemplate the Guru. ||1||
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ; ਕੋਇ. ਨ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bin; koe. na langhas paar |
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਬਗੈਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
Without the Fear of God, no one crosses over the world-ocean.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਰਾਖਿਆ; ਭਾਇ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhai bhau raakhiaa; bhaae savaar |1| rahaau |
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਾਹ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
This Fear of God adorns the Love of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਭੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ; ਭੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
bhai tan agan bhakhai; bhai naal |
ਸ਼੍ਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
The fire of fear within the body is burnt away by the Fear of God.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਘੜੀਐ; ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bhau gharreeai; sabad savaar |
ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਅਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਬੋਲਚਾਲ ਢਾਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
Through this Fear of God, we are adorned with the Word of the Shabad.
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ; ਘਾੜਤ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚ ॥
bhai bin; ghaarrat kach nikach |
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਡਰਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਹੀ ਨਿਕੰਮਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without the Fear of God, all that is fashioned is false.
ਅੰਧਾ ਸਚਾ; ਅੰਧੀ ਸਟ ॥੨॥
andhaa sachaa; andhee satt |2|
ਫਜੂਲ ਹੈ ਸੰਚਾ ਤੇ ਫਜੂਲ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਈ ਟਕੋਰ।
Useless is the mold, and useless are the hammer-strokes on the mold. ||2||
ਬੁਧੀ ਬਾਜੀ; ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥
budhee baajee; upajai chaau |
ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The desire for the worldly drama arises in the intellect,
ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ; ਪਵੈ ਨ ਤਾਉ ॥
sehas siaanap; pavai na taau |
ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ, ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਦਾ ਸੇਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ।
but even with thousands of clever mental tricks, the heat of the Fear of God does not come into play.
ਨਾਨਕ; ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਵਾਉ ॥
naanak; manamukh bolan vaau |
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਧਰਮੀ ਦੀ ਗਲਬਾਤ ਬੇਹੁਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, the speech of the self-willed manmukh is just wind.
ਅੰਧਾ ਅਖਰੁ; ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੩॥੧॥
andhaa akhar; vaau duaau |3|1|
ਨਿਕੰਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਫਜੂਲ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼।
His words are worthless and empty, like the wind. ||3||1||

Gauree, First Mehl:
ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ. ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ; ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
ddar ghar. ghar ddar; ddar ddar jaae |
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਭੈ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਧਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹੇ ਤਦ, ਤੇਰਾ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਭੈ, ਭੈਭੀਤ ਹੋ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
Place the Fear of God within the home of your heart; with this Fear of God in your heart, all other fears shall be frightened away.
ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ; ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ. ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
so ddar kehaa; jit ddar. ddar paae |
ਉਹ ਭੈ ਕਿਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਭਉੈ ਭੀਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
What sort of fear is that, which frightens other fears?
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ; ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
tudh bin; doojee naahee jaae |
ਤੇਰੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ।
Without You, I have other place of rest at all.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ; ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
jo kichh varatai; sabh teree rajaae |1|
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਮੂਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੈ।
Whatever happens is all according to Your Will. ||1||
ਡਰੀਐ; ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
ddareeai; je ddar hovai hor |
ਅਸੀਂ ਖੌਫ ਖਾ, ਜੇਕਰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰਸ ਦਾ ਖੌਫ ਹੋਵੇ।
Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God.
ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ; ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ddar ddar ddaranaa; man kaa sor |1| rahaau |
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਭਊ ਬਗੈਰ ਹੋਰਸ ਦੇ ਭਉ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਮ ਜਾਣਾ ਨਿਰਾਪੁਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੋਰ ਸ਼ਰਾਬਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ; ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥
naa jeeo marai; na ddoobai tarai |
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨਾਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਂ ਡੁਬਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The soul does not die; it does not drown, and it does not swim across.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ; ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
jin kichh keea; so kichh karai |
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The One who created everything does everything.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ; ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
hukame aavai; hukame jaae |
ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਅਮਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਚਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
By the Hukam of His Command we come, and by the Hukam of His Command we go.
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ; ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
aagai paachhai; hukam samaae |2|
ਇਸ ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਅਗਾੜੀ ਤੇ ਪਿਛਾੜੀ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Before and after, His Command is pervading. ||2||
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ; ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥
hans het; aasaa asamaan |
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਰਦਈਪੁਣਾ, ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ, ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰਾਂ ਹਨ,
Cruelty, attachment, desire and egotism
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ; ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥
tis vich bhookh bahut; nai saan |
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਮਾਨਿੰਦ ਬੜੀ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ।
there is great hunger in these, like the raging torrent of a wild stream.
ਭਉ; ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
bhau; khaanaa peenaa aadhaar |
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹੀ ਖਾਣ, ਪੀਣ ਅਤੇ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
Let the Fear of God be your food, drink and support.
ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ; ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
vin khaadhe; mar hohi gavaar |3|
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Without doing this, the fools simply die. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ; ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥
jis kaa koe koee; koe koe |
ਜੇਕਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਿੱਜ ਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੈ।
If anyone really has anyone else - how rare is that person!
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ; ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabh ko teraa; toon sabhanaa kaa soe |
ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੈ।
All are Yours - You are the Lord of all.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ; ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
jaa ke jeea jant; dhan maal |
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਜੰਤ, ਸਭ ਦੌਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਹਨ,
All beings and creatures, wealth and property belong to Him.
ਨਾਨਕ; ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak; aakhan bikham beechaar |4|2|
ਨਾਨਕ, ਔਖਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਰਨਣ ਅਤੇ ਵਿੱਚਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ।
O Nanak, it is so difficult to describe and contemplate Him. ||4||2||

ਮਾਤਾ ਮਤਿ; ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥
maataa mat; pitaa santokh |
ਮੈਂ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਮੜੀ, ਸਤੁੰਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਾਬਲ,
Let wisdom be your mother, and contentment your father.
ਸਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਿ; ਏਹੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੧॥
sat bhaaee kar; ehu visekh |1|
ਅਤੇ ਸਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਭਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਹਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ।
Let Truth be your brother - these are your best relatives. ||1||
ਕਹਣਾ ਹੈ; ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
kahanaa hai; kichh kehan na jaae |
ਲੋਕ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
He has been described, but He cannot be described at all.
ਤਉ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ; ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tau kudarat; keemat nahee paae |1| rahaau |
ਤੇਰੀ ਅਪਾਰ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦਾ, ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
Your All-pervading creative nature cannot be estimated. ||1||Pause||
