ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਮਣ ਕਾਗਜ਼ ਹੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਵਾਚ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪੈ ਜਾਵੇ।
O Nanak, if I had hundreds of thousands of stacks of paper, and if I were to read and recite and embrace love for the Lord,
ਮਸੂ. ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ; ਲੇਖਣਿ. ਪਉਣੁ ਚਲਾਉ ॥

ਜੇਕਰ ਸਿਆਹੀ ਦੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਕਮੀ ਨਾਂ ਵਾਪਰੇ, ਜੇਕਰ ਲਿਖਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਲਮ ਹਵਾ ਦੀ ਰਫਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਵਗੇ,
and if ink were never to fail me, and if my pen were able to move like the wind
ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ. ਨਾ ਪਵੈ; ਹਉ. ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੨॥

ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੱਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਆਖਾਂ?
-even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? ||4||2||

ਹਿਸਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਿਸਾਬ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਭੋਜਨ ਛਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
As it is pre-ordained, people speak their words. As it is pre-ordained, they consume their food.
ਲੇਖੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਾਈਆ; ਲੇਖੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਾਉ ॥
lekhai vaatt chalaaeea; lekhai sun vekhaau |
ਹਿਸਾਬ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਰਾਹੋ ਟੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਿਸਾਬ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
As it is pre-ordained, they walk along the way. As it is pre-ordained, they see and hear.
ਲੇਖੈ. ਸਾਹ ਲਵਾਈਅਹਿ; ਪੜੇ ਕਿ ਪੁਛਣ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥

ਹਿਸਾਬ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਸ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਕੋਲੋ ਪਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਉਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ?
As it is pre-ordained, they draw their breath. Why should I go and ask the scholars about this? ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ; ਮਾਇਆ ਰਚਨਾ ਧੋਹੁ ॥
baabaa; maaeaa rachanaa dhohu |
ਹੇ ਪਿਤਾ! ਧੋਖਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੌਣਕ।
O Baba, the splendor of Maya is deceptive.
ਅੰਧੈ. ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ; ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਏਹ. ਨ ਓਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

(ਆਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਮੁਨਾਖੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਨਾਂ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਅਗਲੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਖੀ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
The blind man has forgotten the Name; he is in limbo, neither here nor there. ||1||Pause||
ਜੀਵਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ; ਏਥੈ. ਖਾਜੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥
jeevan maranaa jaae kai; ethai. khaajai kaal |
ਹਰ ਸ਼ੈ ਜੋ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਪੈਦਾਇਸ਼ ਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਹੈ। ਏਕੇ ਹਰ ਸ਼ੈ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਨਿਗਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
Life and death come to all who are born. Everything here gets devoured by Death.
ਜਿਥੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ; ਤਿਥੈ. ਕੋਇ ਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
jithai beh samajhaaeeai; tithai. koe na chalio naal |
ਜਿਥੇ (ਧਰਮਰਾਜ) ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੇ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
He sits and examines the accounts, there where no one goes along with anyone.
ਰੋਵਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੇਤੜੇ; ਸਭਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ. ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

ਇਕ ਵਾਢਿਓਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਫੂਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਠੜੀਆਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who weep and wail might just as well all tie bundles of straw. ||2||
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ, ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ; ਘਟਿ. ਨ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabh ko aakhai, bahut bahut; ghatt. na aakhai koe |
ਸਾਰੇ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਡਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਮ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਘਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ।
Everyone says that God is the Greatest of the Great. No one calls Him any less.
ਕੀਮਤਿ. ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ; ਕਹਣਿ. ਨ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਮੁੱਲ ਮਲੂਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਨਿਰਾ ਆਖਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
No one can estimate His Worth. By speaking of Him, His Greatness is not increased.
ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਬੁ. ਏਕੁ ਤੂ; ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਆ ਕੇਤੇ ਲੋਅ ॥੩॥

ਕੇਵਲ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਸੰਸਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੋਰਸੁ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੈ।
You are the One True Lord and Master of all the other beings, of so many worlds. ||3||
ਨੀਚਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ. ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ; ਨੀਚੀ ਹੂ. ਅਤਿ ਨੀਚੁ ॥

ਜਿਹੜੇ ਨੀਵੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਜਾਤੀਂ ਦੇ ਹਨ-ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਮਾੜਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਾੜੇ ਹਨ;
Nanak seeks the company of the lowest of the low class, the very lowest of the low.
ਨਾਨਕੁ. ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਥਿ; ਵਡਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੀਸ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਲੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਚੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਰੀਸ ਉਹ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਰੇ?
Why should he try to compete with the great?
ਜਿਥੈ ਨੀਚ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ; ਤਿਥੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ॥੪॥੩॥

ਜਿਥੇ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਨਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਥੇ ਹੇ ਸਾਈਂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਵਰਸਦੀ ਹੈ।
In that place where the lowly are cared for-there, the Blessings of Your Glance of Grace rain down. ||4||3||

ਲਬੁ ਕੁਤਾ. ਕੂੜੁ ਚੂਹੜਾ; ਠਗਿ ਖਾਧਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥
lab kutaa. koorr chooharraa; tthag khaadhaa muradaar |
ਲਾਲਚ ਕੂਕਰ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠ ਇਕ ਭੰਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਛਲਣਾ ਇਕ ਲਾਸ਼ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਹੈ।
Greed is a dog; falsehood is a filthy street-sweeper. Cheating is eating a rotting carcass.
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ. ਪਰ ਮਲੁ ਮੁਖ ਸੁਧੀ; ਅਗਨਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲੁ ॥
par nindaa. par mal mukh sudhee; agan krodh chanddaal |
ਹੋਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਕਲੰਕ ਲਾਉਣਾ ਨਿਰੀਪੁਰੀ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਦੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਉਣੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਰੋਹ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਇਕ ਕੰਮੀ।
Slandering others is putting the filth of others into your own mouth. The fire of anger is the outcaste who burns dead bodies at the crematorium.
ਰਸ ਕਸ. ਆਪੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ; ਏ ਕਰਮ ਮੇਰੇ. ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥
ras kas. aap salaahanaa; e karam mere. karataar |1|
ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਿਆਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ, ਮਿੱਠੇ ਤੇ ਸਲੂਣੇ ਸੁਆਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਵਡਿਆਈ ਅੰਦਰ, ਮੈਂ ਖਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ। ਇਹ ਹਨ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ।
I am caught in these tastes and flavors, and in self-conceited praise. These are my actions, O my Creator! ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲੀਐ; ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

ਹੇ ਭਰਾਵਾ! ਉਹ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇ।
O Baba, speak only that which will bring you honor.
ਊਤਮ ਸੇ. ਦਰਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ; ਨੀਚ ਕਰਮ. ਬਹਿ ਰੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਚੰਗੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਚੰਗੇ ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੰਦੇ ਅਮਲਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
They alone are good, who are judged good at the Lord's Door. Those with bad karma can only sit and weep. ||1||Pause||
ਰਸੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ. ਰਸੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਾਮਣਿ; ਰਸੁ ਪਰਮਲ ਕੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

ਕੰਚਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ, ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਟਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ, ਚੰਨਣ ਦੀ ਸੁਗੰਧਤਾ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ,
The pleasures of gold and silver, the pleasures of women, the pleasure of the fragrance of sandalwood,
ਰਸੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਸੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਮੰਦਰ; ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਰਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ॥
ras ghorre ras sejaa mandar; ras meetthaa ras maas |
ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ, ਮੋਹਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਪਲੰਘ ਤੇ ਮਹਿਲ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ, ਮਠਿਆਈਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਸ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ,
the pleasure of horses, the pleasure of a soft bed in a palace, the pleasure of sweet treats and the pleasure of hearty meals
ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ; ਕੈ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
ete ras sareer ke; kai ghatt naam nivaas |2|
ਐਨੇ ਹਨ ਚਸਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਦੇਹ ਦੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
-these pleasures of the human body are so numerous; how can the Naam, the Name of the Lord, find its dwelling in the heart? ||2||
ਜਿਤੁ ਬੋਲਿਐ. ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ; ਸੋ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਚਨਾ ਦੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਜ਼ਤ-ਆਬਰੂ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਬਚਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Those words are acceptable, which, when spoken, bring honor.
ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਿ. ਵਿਗੁਚਣਾ; ਸੁਣਿ. ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਅਜਾਣ ॥
fikaa bol. viguchanaa; sun. moorakh man ajaan |
ਰੁਖੇ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਰਵਣ ਕਰ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਵਕੂਫ ਤੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਆਤਮਾ!
Harsh words bring only grief. Listen, O foolish and ignorant mind!
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ. ਸੇ ਭਲੇ; ਹੋਰਿ ਕਿ ਕਹਣ ਵਖਾਣ ॥੩॥
jo tis bhaaveh. se bhale; hor ki kehan vakhaan |3|
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਚੰਗੇ ਹਨ। ਬਾਕੀ ਹੋਰ ਕੀ ਆਖਣਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ?
Those who are pleasing to Him are good. What else is there to be said? ||3||
ਤਿਨ ਮਤਿ. ਤਿਨ ਪਤਿ. ਤਿਨ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ; ਜਿਨ. ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
tin mat. tin pat. tin dhan palai; jin. hiradai rahiaa samaae |
ਦਾਨਾਈ, ਪੱਤ-ਆਬਰੂ ਤੇ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਝੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਹਰੀ ਰਮਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Wisdom, honor and wealth are in the laps of those whose hearts remain permeated with the Lord.
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ; ਅਵਰ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਕਾਇ ॥
tin kaa kiaa saalaahanaa; avar suaaliau kaae |
ਆਦਮੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਉਪਮਾਂ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਹਾਰ-ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ?
What praise can be offered to them? What other adornments can be bestowed upon them?
ਨਾਨਕ. ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ; ਰਾਚਹਿ ਦਾਨਿ ਨ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੪॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ-ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
O Nanak, those who lack the Lord's Glance of Grace cherish neither charity nor the Lord's Name. ||4||4||

ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਨਸ਼ੀਲੀ ਗੋਲੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।
The Great Giver has given the intoxicating drug of falsehood.
ਮਤੀ. ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ; ਖੁਸੀ ਕੀਤੀ. ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਚਹੁੰ-ਦਿਹਾੜਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
The people are intoxicated; they have forgotten death, and they have fun for a few days.
ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ. ਤਿਨ ਸੋਫੀਆ; ਰਾਖਣ ਕਉ ਦਰਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨਸ਼ੀਲੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾ ਵਰਤਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਸਚਾਈ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Those who do not use intoxicants are true; they dwell in the Court of the Lord. ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ. ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ; ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੇਵਲ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੰਚਾ ਸਮਝ।
O Nanak, know the True Lord as True.
ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ. ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ; ਤੇਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ! ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
Serving Him, peace is obtained; you shall go to His Court with honor. ||1||Pause||
ਸਚੁ ਸਰਾ ਗੁੜ ਬਾਹਰਾ; ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
sach saraa gurr baaharaa; jis vich sachaa naau |
ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਗੁੜ ਦੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ।
The Wine of Truth is not fermented from molasses. The True Name is contained within it.
