ਸਿਰੀ ਰਾਗ, ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਭਾਗ ਵਿੱਚ, ਹੈ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਸੱਜਣਾ! ਬੱਚੇ ਦੀ ਗ਼ਾਫਲ ਮੱਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your innocent mind has a child-like understanding.

ਬਾਲਕ ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਡ ਲਡਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਅੰਮੜੀ ਤੇ ਬਾਬਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

You drink milk, and you are fondled so gently, O my merchant friend.

ਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਉ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹਰਜਣਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਖਚਤ ਹੈ।

The mother and father love their child so much, but in Maya, all are caught in emotional attachment.

ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਦੌਲਤ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਗਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਰਹੁ-ਰੀਤੀ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

By the good fortune of good deeds done in the past, you have come, and now you perform actions to determine your future.

ਵਿਆਪਕ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਡੁਬ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained, and you are drowned in the love of duality.

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੈ ਫਾਨੀ ਬੰਦੇ! ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਭਾਗ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੰਦ-ਖਲਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

Says Nanak, in the first watch of the night, O mortal, you shall be saved by remembering the Lord. ||1||

ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ! ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰੀ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, you are intoxicated with the wine of youth and beauty.

ਦਿਹੁੰ ਰੈਣ ਉਸ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਭੋਗ ਅੰਦਰ ਗਲਤਾਨ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਅਤੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ।

Day and night, you are engrossed in sexual desire, O my merchant friend, and your consciousness is blind to the Naam.

ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਹੋਰਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਠੜੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Lord's Name is not within your heart, but all sorts of other tastes seem sweet to you.

ਕੂੜੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੇ ਪਲੇ ਬi੍ਰਹਮ ਵੀਚਾਰ, ਬੰਦਗੀ ਨੇਕੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਪਾ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਹੇਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਮਰਣ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਏਗਾ।

You have no wisdom at all, no meditation, no virtue or self-discipline; in falsehood, you are caught in the cycle of birth and death.

ਧਰਮ-ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾਂ, ਉਪਹਾਸ, ਸਫਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਰਿਆਜ਼ਤ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ, ਧਾਰਮਕ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਹੈ।

Pilgrimages, fasts, purification and self-discipline are of no use, nor are rituals, religious ceremonies or empty worship.

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੋਖ਼ਸ਼ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪਰੇਮ-ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ। ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂਦਾਰੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਗ਼ਲਤਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, emancipation comes only by loving devotional worship; through duality, people are engrossed in duality. ||2||

ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਸਜਣਾ! ਚਿੱਟੇ ਰਾਜ ਹੰਸ (ਵਾਲ) ਸੀਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਤੇ ਆ ਉਤਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the swans, the white hairs, come and land upon the pool of the head.

ਜੁਆਨੀ ਛਿਜਦੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਜਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਹਾੜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਮਰ ਕਮ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ!

Youth wears itself out, and old age triumphs, O my merchant friend; as time passes, your days diminish.

ਹੇ ਮੁਨਾਖੇ! ਤੂੰ ਅਖੀਰ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਜਦ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਧੱਕ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।

At the last moment, you repent-you are so blind!-when the Messenger of Death seizes you and carries you away.

ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੀ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ, ਆਦਮੀ ਹਰ ਸ਼ੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਲ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

You kept all your things for yourself, but in an instant, they are all lost.

ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਮਾਰੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀ ਟੁਰ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਕਰਮ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਬਦਲੇ ਪਸਚਾਤਾਪ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ।

Your intellect left you, your wisdom departed, and now you repent for the evil deeds you committed.

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਫ਼ਾਨੀ! ਤੀਸਰੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ।

Says Nanak, O mortal, in the third watch of the night, let your consciousness be lovingly focused on God. ||3||

ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਚੌਥੇ ਪਹਿਰ ਅੰਦਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਆਦਮੀ ਦੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁੱਢੀ ਤੇ ਲਿੱਸੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your body grows old and weak.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਕੰਨ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ!

Your eyes go blind, and cannot see, O my merchant friend, and your ears do not hear any words.

ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਲੋਚਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਦ-ਸੱਖਣੀ ਜੀਭਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਦੇ ਬਲ (ਆਸਰੇ) ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Your eyes go blind, and your tongue is unable to taste; you live only with the help of others.

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨੇਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਅਧਰਮੀ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

With no virtue within, how can you find peace? The self-willed manmukh comes and goes in reincarnation.

ਜਦ ਦੇਹਿ ਰੂਪੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਪੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਲਿਫ ਕੇ ਟੁਟਦੀ ਤੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੈ, ਕੀ ਫ਼ਖ਼ਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ?

When the crop of life has matured, it bends, breaks and perishes; why take pride in that which comes and goes?

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਚੋਥੇ ਭਾਗ ਅੰਦਰ, ਹੇ ਫ਼ਾਨੀ ਬੰਦੇ! ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਤਾਬੇ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਞਾਣ।

Says Nanak, O mortal, in the fourth watch of the night, the Gurmukh recognizes the Word of the Shabad. ||4||

ਤੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਖੀਰ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਅਤੇ ਜਾਲਮ ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੋਢਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਚੜਿ੍ਹਆ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Your breath comes to its end, O my merchant friend, and your shoulders are weighed down by the tyrant of old age.

ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕ ਭੋਰਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਨੇਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਈ ਅਤੇ ਬਦੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜਕੜਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੂੰ ਅਗੇ ਤੌਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ, ਹੈ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ!

Not one iota of virtue came into you, O my merchant friend; bound and gagged by evil, you are driven along.

ਜੋ ਨੇਕੀ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਚਾਲੇ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੱਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਮੁਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

One who departs with virtue and self-discipline is not struck down, and is not consigned to the cycle of birth and death.

ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਫੰਧਾ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੂਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ, ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੇ ਅਨੁਰਾਗ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਡਰ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Messenger of Death and his trap cannot touch him; through loving devotional worship, he crosses over the ocean of fear.

ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਮ-ਅਨੰਦ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖੜੇ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

He departs with honor, and merges in intuitive peace and poise; all his pains depart.

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Says Nanak, when the mortal becomes Gurmukh, he is saved and honored by the True Lord. ||5||2||
