ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਸਚਾਈ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਆਰਾਮ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਉਣਗੇ?
Those who do not have the Assets of Truth-how can they find peace?
ਖੋਟੈ ਵਣਜਿ ਵਣੰਜਿਐ; ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਖੋਟਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
khottai vanaj vananjiai; man tan khottaa hoe |
ਕੂੜੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਕੂੜੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
By dealing their deals of falsehood, their minds and bodies become false.
ਫਾਹੀ ਫਾਥੇ ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਉ; ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਨਿਤ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥

ਫੰਧੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਰਣ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਘਨੇਰਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Like the deer caught in the trap, they suffer in terrible agony; they continually cry out in pain. ||2||
ਖੋਟੇ. ਪੋਤੈ ਨਾ ਪਵਹਿ; ਤਿਨ. ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ, ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
khotte. potai naa paveh; tin. har gur, daras na hoe |
ਜਾਹਲੀ ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਲੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
The counterfeit coins are not put into the Treasury; they do not obtain the Blessed Vision of the Lord-Guru.
ਖੋਟੇ. ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ; ਖੋਟਿ. ਨ ਸੀਝਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥
khotte. jaat na pat hai; khott. na seejhas koe |
ਕੂੜ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਤੀ ਤੇ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ। ਕੂੜ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
The false ones have no social status or honor. No one succeeds through falsehood.
ਖੋਟੇ ਖੋਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ; ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥੩॥

ਝੁਠਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਵਾਗਉਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Practicing falsehood again and again, people come and go in reincarnation, and forfeit their honor. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕ. ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ; ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਸਲਾਹ-ਮਸ਼ਵਰੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨੂਏ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ-ਮੱਤ ਦੇ।
O Nanak, instruct your mind through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and praise the Lord.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਿਆ; ਭਾਰੁ ਨ ਭਰਮੁ. ਤਿਨਾਹ ॥
raam naam rang ratiaa; bhaar na bharam. tinaah |
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੋਝ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਦੇਹ।
Those who are imbued with the love of the Name of the Lord are not loaded down by doubt.
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਅਗਲਾ; ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹਰਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਹ ॥੪॥੨੩॥
har jap laahaa agalaa; nirbhau har man maah |4|23|
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਭੈ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਭਾਰਾ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਕਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Those who chant the Name of the Lord earn great profits; the Fearless Lord abides within their minds. ||4||23||

ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਅਰੁ ਫੁਲੜਾ; ਨਾਠੀਅੜੇ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

ਦੌਲਤ, ਜੁਆਨੀ, ਅਤੇ ਫੁਲ ਕੇਵਲ ਚਹੁੰ ਦਿਹਾੜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਹੁਣੇ ਹਨ।
Wealth, the beauty of youth and flowers are guests for only a few days.
ਪਬਣਿ ਕੇਰੇ. ਪਤ ਜਿਉ; ਢਲਿ ਢੁਲਿ ਜੁੰਮਣਹਾਰ ॥੧॥

ਚੁਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਿਆਂ ਵਾਙੂ ਉਹ ਮੁਰਝਾ, ਸੁਕ-ਸੜ (ਤੇ ਆਖਰ) ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Like the leaves of the water-lily, they wither and fade and finally die. ||1||
ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣਿ ਲੈ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ; ਜਾ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਨਉ ਹੁਲਾ ॥
rang maan lai piaariaa; jaa joban nau hulaa |
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਲੈ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ! ਜਦ ਤੋੜੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੁਲਾਰੇ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਵੀ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਹੈ।
Be happy, dear beloved, as long as your youth is fresh and delightful.
ਦਿਨ ਥੋੜੜੇ ਥਕੇ; ਭਇਆ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਚੋਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਤੇਰੇ ਦਿਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਘਟ ਹਨ, ਤੂੰ ਹਾਰ ਹੁਟ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਬ੍ਰਿਧ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
But your days are few-you have grown weary, and now your body has grown old. ||1||Pause||
ਸਜਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਰੰਗੁਲੇ; ਜਾਇ ਸੁਤੇ ਜੀਰਾਣਿ ॥
sajan mere rangule; jaae sute jeeraan |
ਮੇਰੇ ਖਿਲੰਦੜੇ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਬਰਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੌਂ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
My playful friends have gone to sleep in the graveyard.
ਹੰ ਭੀ ਵੰਞਾ ਡੁਮਣੀ; ਰੋਵਾ ਝੀਣੀ ਬਾਣਿ ॥੨॥
han bhee vanyaa ddumanee; rovaa jheenee baan |2|
ਮੈਂ ਦੁਚਿੱਤੀ ਹੀ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਧੀਮੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨਾਲ ਰੋਵਾਂਗੀ।
In my double-mindedness, I shall have to go as well. I cry in a feeble voice. ||2||
ਕੀ. ਨ ਸੁਣੇਹੀ ਗੋਰੀਏ; ਆਪਣ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

ਆਪਣਿਆਂ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੁਫੈਦ ਰੰਗ ਵਾਲੀਏ ਰੂਹੇ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਇਹ ਕਨਸੋ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ?
Haven't you heard the call from beyond, O beautiful soul-bride?
ਲਗੀ ਆਵਹਿ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ; ਨਿਤ. ਨ ਪੇਈਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
lagee aaveh saahurai; nit. na peeea hoe |3|
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਹੁਰੇ-ਘਰ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਾਬਲ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੇਗੀਂ।
You must go to your in-laws; you cannot stay with your parents forever. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕ. ਸੁਤੀ ਪੇਈਐ; ਜਾਣੁ ਵਿਰਤੀ ਸੰਨਿ ॥

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਮਝ ਲੈ ਕਿ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੇਕੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁੱਤੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ-ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਪਾੜ ਲੱਗ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, know that she who sleeps in her parents' home is plundered in broad daylight.
ਗੁਣਾ ਗਵਾਈ ਗੰਠੜੀ; ਅਵਗਣ ਚਲੀ ਬੰਨਿ ॥੪॥੨੪॥
gunaa gavaaee ganttharree; avagan chalee ban |4|24|
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਗੰਢ ਗੁਆ ਲਈ ਹੈ, ਬਦੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਟੁਰ ਚਲੀ ਹੈ।
She has lost her bouquet of merits; gathering one of demerits, she departs. ||4||24||

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਖੁਦ ਸੁਆਦ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਆਦ, ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਭੋਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ।
He Himself is the Enjoyer, and He Himself is the Enjoyment. He Himself is the Ravisher of all.
ਆਪੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਚੋਲੜਾ; ਆਪੇ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

ਉਹ ਆਪ ਚੌਲੀ (ਪਤਨੀ) ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਲੰਘ ਤੇ ਪਤੀ।
He Himself is the Bride in her dress, He Himself is the Bridegroom on the bed. ||1||
ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ; ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰੀ-ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਸਮਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
My Lord and Master is imbued with love; He is totally permeating and pervading all. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪੇ ਮਾਛੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ; ਆਪੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਾਲੁ ॥
aape maachhee machhulee; aape paanee jaal |
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੀਗੀਰ ਤੇ ਮੱਛੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਫੰਧਾ।
He Himself is the fisherman and the fish; He Himself is the water and the net.
ਆਪੇ ਜਾਲ ਮਣਕੜਾ; ਆਪੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲਾਲੁ ॥੨॥
aape jaal manakarraa; aape andar laal |2|
ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਫੰਧੇ ਦਾ ਧਾਤ ਦਾ ਮਣਕਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਲੀ ਕੁੰਡੀ।
He Himself is the sinker, and He Himself is the bait. ||2||
ਆਪੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੰਗੁਲਾ; ਸਖੀਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਲਾਲੁ ॥
aape bahu bidh rangulaa; sakhee meraa laal |
ਮੇਰੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਓ! ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਖਿਲੰਦੜਾ ਹੈ।
He Himself loves in so many ways. O sister soul-brides, He is my Beloved.
ਨਿਤ ਰਵੈ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ; ਦੇਖੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੩॥
nit ravai sohaaganee; dekh hamaaraa haal |3|
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੇਰੀ ਦਸ਼ਾ (ਜੋ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹਾਂ) ਵਲ ਨਿਗ੍ਹਾ ਕਰ।
He continually ravishes and enjoys the happy soul-brides; just look at the plight I am in without Him! ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੇਨਤੀ; ਤੂ ਸਰਵਰੁ. ਤੂ ਹੰਸੁ ॥
pranavai naanak benatee; too saravar. too hans |
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਦੜੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਸੁਣ। ਤੂੰ ਤਲਾਬ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਰਾਜ-ਹੰਸ।
Prays Nanak, please hear my prayer: You are the pool, and You are the soul-swan.
ਕਉਲੁ ਤੂ ਹੈ. ਕਵੀਆ ਤੂ ਹੈ; ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੁ ॥੪॥੨੫॥
kaul too hai. kaveea too hai; aape vekh vigas |4|25|
ਤੂੰ ਕੰਵਲ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਕਵੀਆ। (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
You are the lotus flower of the day and You are the water-lily of the night. You Yourself behold them, and blossom forth in bliss. ||4||25||

ਇਸ ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਲੀ ਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਮਲਾ ਨੂੰ ਬੀ ਬਣਾ, ਅਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਜ।
Make this body the field, and plant the seed of good actions. Water it with the Name of the Lord, who holds all the world in His Hands.
ਮਨੁ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ. ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਜੰਮਾਇ ਲੈ; ਇਉ ਪਾਵਸਿ. ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
man kirasaan. har ridai jamaae lai; iau paavas. pad nirabaanee |1|
ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਖੇਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਾ। ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਗਵ ਪਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੋਖ਼ਸ਼ ਦਾ ਉਤਮ ਦਰਜਾ ਪਾ ਲਵੇਗਾਂ।
Let your mind be the farmer; the Lord shall sprout in your heart, and you shall attain the state of Nirvaanaa. ||1||
ਕਾਹੇ ਗਰਬਸਿ ਮੂੜੇ; ਮਾਇਆ ॥
kaahe garabas moorre; maaeaa |
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ?
You fool! Why are you so proud of Maya?
ਪਿਤ ਸੁਤੋ ਸਗਲ ਕਾਲਤ੍ਰ ਮਾਤਾ; ਤੇਰੇ. ਹੋਹਿ ਨ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਇਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pit suto sagal kaalatr maataa; tere. hohi na ant sakhaaeaa | rahaau |
ਬਾਬਲ, ਪੁਤ੍ਰ, ਪਤਨੀ, ਅੰਮੜੀ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ (ਸਨਬੰਧੀ), ਅਖੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।
Father, children, spouse, mother and all relatives-they shall not be your helpers in the end. ||Pause||
ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਦੁਸਟ. ਕਿਰਖਾ ਕਰੇ; ਇਨ ਤਜਿ. ਆਤਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
bikhai bikaar dusatt. kirakhaa kare; in taj. aatamai hoe dhiaaee |
ਮੰਦੇ ਵੈਲਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਟ ਛੱਡ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਇਕਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ (ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ) ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ।
So weed out evil, wickedness and corruption; leave these behind, and let your soul meditate on God.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ. ਹੋਹਿ ਜਬ ਰਾਖੇ; ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ. ਮਧੁ ਆਸ੍ਰਮਾਈ ॥੨॥

ਜਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ, ਕਰੜੀ ਘਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵੇਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੋਕ-ਥਾਮ ਰਖਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਾ ਦਿਲ-ਕੰਵਲ ਖਿੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਤ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਪਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
When chanting, austere meditation and self-discipline become your protectors, then the lotus blossoms forth, and the honey trickles out. ||2||
ਬੀਸ ਸਪਤਾਹਰੋ. ਬਾਸਰੋ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ; ਤੀਨਿ ਖੋੜਾ. ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਾਰੈ ॥

ਵੀਹ ਤੇ ਸੱਤ ਤੱਤਾ ਦੇ ਵੱਸਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਤ੍ਰ (ਕਾਬੂ) ਕਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਿੰਨੇ ਹੀ (ਦਸ਼ਾਂ) ਜਾਂ (ਕੰਦਰਾ) ਅੰਦਰ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ।
Bring the twenty-seven elements of the body under your control, and throughout the three stages of life, remember death.
ਦਸ ਅਠਾਰ ਮੈ. ਅਪਰੰਪਰੋ ਚੀਨੈ; ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ. ਇਵ ਏਕੁ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੩॥੨੬॥

ਦਸਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਠਾਰਾਂ (ਭਾਵ ਬਨਾਸਪਤੀ) ਵਿੱਚ ਹੱਦ-ਬੰਨਾ ਰਹਿਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ। ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਕ ਮਾਲਕ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ!
See the Infinite Lord in the ten directions, and in all the variety of nature. Says Nanak, in this way, the One Lord shall carry you across. ||3||26||
